Abbreviated Lesson 1

Essential Question:
How have historical figures or events impacted our local community over time?

Guiding Question:
Can we define keywords such as, colony, colonization, knighted, and expedition to help
our understanding of an article?

Standards:
History 3.H.1.1 Explain key historical events that occurred in the local community and
regions over time
Language Arts L.3.4.D Use glossaries or beginning dictionaries, both print and digital,
to determine or clarify the precise meaning of keywords and phrases.

Objectives:
Students will be able to
Use dictionaries, glossaries, and the internet to find the meaning of words or phrases
Define unknown vocabulary found in the Sir Walter Raleigh article

(materials needed would be a laminated copy of this worksheet and 1 dice)

Academic vocabulary chart (This is a chart that students have in their reading/ writing
folders. The columns read: unknown word, picture, definition, word in my home
language. They will use these charts in the activity)

Lesson Development:
1. In pairs, students will read the article about Sir Walter Raleigh and identify any
unknown vocabulary by highlighting it as they go.
2. When they have finished identifying the vocabulary and writing the words in their
academic vocabulary chart, they will use their choice of either a dictionary, an ipad/
computer, or the textbook glossary to find the definition of the words and complete the
remainder of the academic vocabulary chart.
3. If students should finish early, they can join another group and compare their
definitions and then play the Vocabulary Rock and Roll game
a. Students pick 1 unknown vocabulary
b. 1 student rolls the dice
c. Whichever number it lands on corresponds with an action or direction on the
game board. Students must complete these action/ direction before moving on
to the next person.
4. The last 10 minutes of class will be review of the unknown vocabulary words that the
students defined. During this, students can volunteer to demonstrate and define one of
the unknown words they studied. Students who were able to play the Vocabulary Rock
and Roll game will be able to share one of their actions or directions if they would like.
