Title: Lesson 4 Understanding The Treasure using Story Mapping

Lesson Overview: This lesson aims to teach students a skill, story mapping, they can use in

reading to aide in comprehension.

Resources or Materials Needed: Students will need the mentor text, a story mapping anchor

chart, graphic organizer, worksheet, smart board, electronic microphone, listening center and

pencil.

Lesson Objective: Students will use a story map to explain the theme of the story. (ReadWorks,

2017) Students will be able to use information provided to complete a comprehension worksheet

and meet a satisfactory score of 80%.

Time: 90 minutes

Lesson Plan 4

Step 1: Pre-Instructional Activity

When students enter the classroom from recess, they will come to the carpet area and take a

seat and I will turn on my electronic microphone.

Students will be asked if anyone knows what a story map is. Once they have had a chance to

answer, we will move on. Talk to students about characters and settings to help them get an

idea of what a story map includes.

Teacher will complete a story map anchor chart for students to reference.

Step 2: Content Presentation

Teacher will introduce the book with an attention grabber. What would you do if you found a

buried treasure?

Teacher will read the book and stop periodically to ask students questions in order to check for

understanding throughout the story. This will cause students to be listening for a purpose.
Step 3: Learner Participation

Teacher will post graphic organizer (Appendix G) on the smart board.

Teacher will ask questions to promote student response about the story.

When students answer a question from the graphic organizer, they will reveal the answer by

using the pointer on the interactive smart board and students will fill in their graphic organizer

as the answers unveil. This will continue until the graphic organizer is completely filled in. If

students struggle with answering the questions, the teacher will reread passages to prompt

students recollection of events.

Step 4: Assessment

Students will receive a comprehension worksheet (Appendix H) with multiple choice questions.

Teacher will read each question out loud for students to ensure that they understand what each

question is asking of them.

Students will reach proficiency if they are able to complete the worksheet with 80% accuracy.

Step 5: Follow-Through Activities

Students who need to revisit the text, will have the option to listen to the story again at the

listening center. This will also serve students who missed the reading of the story the first time

that it was read.

After all students have completed the assessment, they will turn it in.

Teacher will display a blank copy of the assessment on the overhead and ask for volunteers to

answer and justify their answers. If students are wrong, they can ask for help from a peer. This

will continue until the whole worksheet has been reviewed and is posted with all of the correct

answers.
