A Mile in Their Shoes 
Biology 1 Learning Activity 
OVERVIEW & PURPOSE 
This lesson will be used as an extension activity for gifted students in a general biology 
classroom who have shown (through pre-assessment) to already grasp the basic concepts 
of the unit. In this lesson, students will use Google Earth Tour Builder to create a 
biography of a scientist who was involved in the race to determine the structure of DNA. 
Students will master one of the VDOE Biology Essential Knowledge and Skills, while also 
developing technology and research skills. Students will work individually in a pull-out 
setting during Biology I class time; however, they may seek assistance and guidance from 
one another. 
EDUCATION STANDARDS 
BIO.5 The student will investigate and understand common mechanisms of inheritance 
and protein synthesis. Key concepts include  
       ●   e) historical development of the structural model of DNA;  
OBJECTIVES 
       1. Students will describe key players in the events leading to the development of the 
           structural model of DNA 
       2. Students will create a virtual tour through the life of a famous DNA researcher 
           using Google Earth Tour Builder software 
MATERIALS NEEDED 
       1. Google Chromebooks with Internet access

       1. Final product satisfies required components outlined by the grading rubric. 
ACTIVITY 
Describe activity  
       1. Student introduction to Google Earth Tour Builder.   
              a. Students will sign in to Google Earth using their division Google email 
                 addresses.   
              b. The teacher will click through one example of a Google Earth tour, 
                 illustrating how it can be used for biographical research. 
              c. Students will have some time to explore Tour Builder and begin to look at 
                 examples of products shared on the site. 
       2. Introduction of activity. 
              a. Teacher will introduce “A Mile in Their Shoes” assignment, giving each 
                 student the name of a DNA researcher. 
              b. Teacher will explain the specifics of the assignment, including grading 
                 requirements. *See the attached instructional handouts.   
       3. Students work on creation of product. 
              a. Either the teacher or the instructional aide or co-teacher will be available 
                 during pull-out sessions to answer questions as necessary.
