Some people believe that a person’s intelligence is inherited from the parents, while others
believe that their environment is the main factor. Discuss these views. Which factor do you think is
mostly responsible for intelligence?
Intelligence - intelectual / mental capacity; intellect; powers of reasoning; wit; perspicacity
Inherited - in the genes; innate; inborn; passed down; heredity
Environment
Human intelligence continues to be a controversial topic as some people perceive intelligence as a mental
capacity which is passed down genetically, from parents to child, while there are other people who strongly
believe that one`s intellect is influenced by the environment. These are valid opinions on both sides, and I
will consider now.
On the one hand, reseachers claim that up to 40% of a child`s intelligence is inherited. For instance,
children adopted away from their biological parents at birth are just as similar to their biological parents as
are children raised by their biological parents. Similarly, we know that adoptive parents and their adopted
children do not typically resemble one another in intelligence.
On the other hand, education and the overall environmental factors influence as well the perspicacity of
children. Studies of the effects of nutrition, toxic substances, home environment, early intervention, and
formal schooling provide additional support for the influence of environment. Also, how parents raise their
children may be just as important as which genes they pass on. A recent study found that having a loving
and nurturing mother significantly contributed to a child’s eventual intelligence. Furthermore, playing a
musical instrument early in life could be a strong predictor of academic success.
Overall, I feel that one`s intellectual capacity depends on the enviroment we are raised. Of course, this is
provided that the conditions in which children are reared include a loving family where encouragement,
caring and stimulation are the main elements of the given education.
