Essay:

Ethics: consent forms – making sure you don’t harm anyone in anyway i.e. psychological or physical
and knowing exactly what will be said about them.

Positionality: how you bias is affect the work – being able to provide counter arguments to your
argument.

Assessing projects in general: five criteria:

1) is it a substantial - does the piece contribute to our understanding of life?


2) Aesthetic merit
3) Reflexivity – how did the author come to write this work? positionality
4) Impact – does this affect me?
5) Does it express a reality?

Thinking about your research question: a thesis statement, a topic and a perspective.

28th of this month – a performance review due by email

Talking about composing:

Pulotu and punake from Tonga

Pulotu also in Tokelau. Anonymous of composer – issues with how pieces are performed later, when
people change it

Fatele – Tokelau compositional work that kind of speeds up at the end. Has dance and rhythmic
accompaniment – usually a box drum, or slit drum or snare and whistle. Thomas reading he talked
about borrowing from older work.

Himene tarava – polyphonic, himene pure – homophonic

Imene tapu – tarava

Imene tuki – has a male grunting shouting

Himene – polyphonic style and tonal shifts going on

Utete – tonga leaves harp

Usu, tali – samoa call and response

fa’ataupati – slapping dance

Listening test test:

Tonga – lakalaka

Samoa – fa’ataupati
Maori – putorino

tonga – fangufangu

Hawaii – olioli

Micronesia – wuur – sung chant with no accompaniment and homophonic texture, - uses slaps etc

Phonpei – dokia

Papua new guinea - peroveta anedia – has a call at the start.
