LENTEN OPPORTUNITIES
With the Lenten season once again upon us, there are various opportunities to enhance and enrich our prayer lives
and parish family relationships. Please mark your calendar for these upcoming occasions:
Stations of the Cross will be held on Wednesday evenings at 7:10 p.m. beginning February 21st
through March 28th
Confessions and a Penance Service will also be available – times to be determined

Speaker Sebastian D’Amico will be offering a morning retreat on
evangelization on Saturday February 24th at the Knights Hall
Fridays during Lent are obligatory days of abstinence. For members of the Catholic
Church, the norms on fasting are obligatory from age 18 until age 59. When fasting, a person is
permitted to eat one full meal, as well as two smaller meals that together are not equal to a full meal.
The norms concerning abstinence from meat are binding upon members of the Latin Catholic Church
from age 14 onwards.

FIRST SUNDAY OF LENT REFLECTION
Why is it so important to make the Corporal and Spiritual Works of Mercy a part of
your Faith life, especially during Lent? Lent is a favorable season for opening the
doors to all those in need and recognizing in them the face of Christ. ….Pope Francis
THERE IS NO REASON TO FAIL THE EXAM OF YOUR FINAL JUDGEMENT.
God has given us the questions and answers to the Final Exam. How specifically did you
show mercy? It is vitally important we prepare for this test. The Works of Mercy is a
checklist to help us make sure we are on track. Just as a pilot has a checklist before landing,
so, too, does Christ through his Church give us a checklist. So just exactly how are you going
to answer Jesus when he asks, “What did you do for the least of my brothers and sisters?”
WORKS OF MERCY ARE THE COMPLETION OF YOUR COMMUNION.
Saint Mother Teresa talked about her mercy ministry to the poor in terms of “the second real
presence”. Just as Christ is really present in the Eucharist, he is also present in “the least of
these.” So when we receive Christ in Communion we are empowered to go out and return
that loving mercy to Christ in those who are in distress, physically and spiritually. Jesus
loves us so much that he gives us a chance to love him back, and to do so, heroically. This is
why Pope Benedict XVI taught that “A Eucharist that does not pass into concrete acts of love
is intrinsically fragmented.”
YOU ARE COMMISSIONED TO BE AN AGENT OF GOD’S LOVE.
We are born and live in the need for God’s mercy. Christ teaches us that we get to make the
grading curve for “the measure by which we measure so shall we be measured”. However,
more importantly, God gives us the supernatural power to be like him and his mercy is his
best attribute. As baptized Christians, we are charged with going out in the world making
Christ’s love visible especially to one another. “Love one another as I have loved you.”
Congratulations to the following second graders on receiving the Sacrament of
Reconciliation last Saturday, Feb. 10: Taitlyn Cole, Daylen Ballinger, Trey Lienemann, Grady Pimple, Alisa Skalsky, Hunter
Wellnitz, Megan Barnhart. WE ARE SO PROUD OF YOU! First Communion is right around the corner now! THANK YOU to
teacher KAY SCHMIDT for preparing them for these special sacraments!
The third and fourth grade class would like to invite the parish to participate in the final
service project of the year. We will be participating in the backpack food program for
students during the Lenten season. Your donations can be placed in the backpacks in
the back of church. The program is in need of the following items; boxed macaroni and
cheese, fruit cups, chicken and tuna packets, pop tarts, romaine noodles, canned
Vienna sausages, canned ravioli, canned spaghetti O's, and single serving liquid
powered milk or powdered milk. Thank you for helping us help those who are hungry.

Knights of Columbus News
Feb 21 - Knights of Columbus meeting scheduled for 7:00 will start following Stations of the Cross.
Feb 25 - 2nd and 3rd Degree Ceremony, 1:00 pm at the Knights Hall. If you are or know a First Degree
Knights of Columbus member, you are encouraged to attend and obtain the Formation (2nd Degree) and
Knighthood (3rd Degree). Candidates for degrees need to at the hall at 12:30 pm to begin paperwork.

Marriage Minute
Are you going through a “dry” time in your marriage? When we feel this way, it can be very
lonely. If this is where you are right now, know that Jesus is with you.
Jesus’ time in the desert was not easy, but he survived it because he relied on his Father through
prayer, which strengthened him for his mission. As married couples, we rely on God through
prayer, sacraments, and by using all the resources the Body of Christ has for us. This includes
gaining valuable skills through marriage enrichment. We also take confidence knowing that in
every trial, great graces await to sustain us.
