From 2012 to 2014 EBSU collaborated with Federation of
Universities of Applied Sciences (FUAS) in a joint research
project know as CONNECT.
“GROOVE CONNECT” project was intended to support
knowledge transfer, knowledge development and capacity
building in the areas of renewable energy technology,
environmental management and education in developing
countries. ’CONNECT created network modes for market
entry in developing countries by Finnish renewable
energy SMEs’.
Here we are taking part in another project with FUAS
“Creating an Ecosystem for Innovating Circular
Economy Solutions for Nigerian Markets through Co-
creation (CIRCLE)”
Ebonyi State is located in the south-eastern part of
Nigeria. It is one of six states created in 1996.
Ebonyi State has a population estimated at 2,176,947 ,
based on the 2006 census.
The inhabitants are spread across 5,935 square
kilometers. The population is homogeneous –
predominantly Igbos.
Igbo is the native language and the most widely spoken.
English is also widely spoken (for many, it is the second
language).
Ebonyi State has a GDP of US$2.7bn
Ebonyi is primarily an agricultural region. It is a leading
producer of rice, yam, potatoes, maize, beans, and cassava
in Nigeria.
Ebonyi is called "the salt of the nation" for its huge salt
deposit at the Okposi and Uburu Salt Lakes

With increase in population, urbanization and industrialization
including globalization, the challenge of solid waste management
in the Nigeria has increased and even now complex (Adejobi and
Olorunnimbe, 2011).
Waste in Ebonyi State is generated via the
following sources:
Household
Market
Hospitals
Hotels/Restaurants/Eateries
Agricultural farm lands
Industries (including mining and Mills)
Our Research Group undertook a study to
determine the waste generation capacity
of Ebonyi State.
Obtained data are as follows: -
Household Waste Generation
Generation/per person /Day
Biodegradable 0.35 kg
Plastic/Paper 0.16 kg
Metals 0.13 kg
Bottles 0.14 kg
World Bank (2014) observes that waste generation in sub-Saharan Africa
is generally low, but spans a wide range, from 0.09 to 3.0 kg per person
per day, with an average of 0.65 kg/capita/day.

CONCLUSION
No towns in Nigeria especially the urban and
semi-urban centres of high population density
can boast of having found a lasting solution to
the problem of filth and huge piles of solid
waste, rather the problem continues to assume
monstrous dimensions (Mba, 2003; Okpala,
1986, Chukwuemeka et al. 2012).
It is expected that this project will help in
proffering lasting solution to this problem.
