IELTS, the International English Language Testing System, is designed to assess
the language ability of candidates who need to study or work where English is used as the
language of communication (1). IELTS is recognized by universities and employers in
many countries, including Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, the UK and the USA.
It is also recognized by professional bodies, immigration authorities and other
government agencies. There are two version of IELTS, the Academic and General
Training (2).

1. IELTS Academic
This version has 4 section, there are listening section, speaking-interview,
reading and writing (3).
a. Listening Section
Listening section have 4 section with 40 questions, and must be done in
30 minutes. Each section is heard once only.
 Section 1: a conversation between two people
 Section 2: a monologue set in an everyday social context
 Section 3: a conversation between up to four people set in an
educational or training context
 Section 4: a monologue on an academic subject (e.g. a university
lecture)
b. Speaking-Interview Section
An interview will take time for 15 minutes.
 Part 1 Introduction and interview
 Part 2 Individual long turn (you have to talk about a topic)
 Part 3 Two-way discussion (The examiner asks further questions
which are connected to the topic of Part 2.)
c. Reading Section
Reading section has 3 long reading passages with 40 questions, it must be
done in 60 minutes. Each section contains one long text. Texts are from
books, journals, magazines and newspapers.
d. Writing Section
Writing section has 2 pieces of writing, this section must be done in 60
minutes
 Part 1: describe, summarise or explain the information in a graph,
table, chart or diagram
 Part 2: write an essay in response to a point of view, argument or
problem

2. IELTS General
Same with IELTS Academic, IELTS General also has 4 sections there are
listening section, speaking-interview, reading and writing. Both of listening
and speaking-interview in IELTS General are same with that section in IELTS
Academic, but in reading and writing section are different (4).
a. Listening Section

c. Reading Section
This section has 3 sections with 40 questions, it must be done in 60
minutes.
 Section 1: two or three short factual texts
 Section 2: contains two short factual texts focusing on work-related
issues
 Section 3: one longer, more complex text
d. Writing Section
This section has 2 pieces of writing, this section must be done in 60
minutes
 Part 1: write a letter requesting information or explaining a
situation.
 Part 2: write an essay in response to a point of view, argument or
problem
IELTS has multi-level. Score that can be achieved between 1 and 9. Half scores
such as 6.5 are possible. Universities often demand an IELTS score of 6 or 7. They may
also demand a minimum score in each of the 4 sections (2).

IELTS is available at more than 1,100 locations worldwide (5). To follow this
test, the participant have to pay approximately £160 GBP, €210 Euros or $230 USD. But
usually each country has different price (2).
