1 knitter’s sewing needle
THE TECHNIQUES
Cable cast on
Create a slip knot on the left hand needle. Knit on one stitch,
creating two stitches on the left hand needle. Now insert
the right needle between the two stitches, wrap and bring
through. Transfer the newly created stitch onto the left hand
needle. Repeat until you have cast on the number of stitches
indicated in the pattern.
Woven stitch
This technique creates a stunning woven-look fabric, suitable
when you want something a little more structural. It is worked
over an uneven number of stitches. (TIP! Our Wool School
features a video tutorial demonstrating this technique.)
Row 1 (RS): Slip the first stitch. Now, instead of working the
next stitch on the left needle, insert the right-hand needle
into the second stitch on the left needle. Insert the needle
purl-wise into the back of the stitch, behind the left needle.
Wrap and pull the yarn through as for a normal knit stitch, but
do not release the stitch off the left needle yet. Next, knit the

first stitch on the left needle in the same way, then slip both
stitches off the left needle. Repeat the section inside the
little stars to the end of the row.
Row 2 (WS): Slip the first stitch. Leave the first stitch on the
left needle for now, and instead purl the second stitch, but
don’t slip it off the needle yet. Purl the first stitch, then slip
both stitches off the left needle. Repeat the section inside
the little stars to the end of the row.

Adding a new ball of yarn
When your ball of yarn runs out, or when you need to change
the colour, tie a loose knot on to the tail with the new ball of
yarn and slide it up to the needle. Tighten the knot. Continue
knitting with the new yarn.
Casting off
When you complete your project, you need to cast off your last
row of stitches in order to make an edge that won’t unravel.
For your final row, knit the first two stitches. Using the tip
of the left needle, lift the first stitch up and over the second
stitch and then slip it off the right needle. Now you have only

one stitch on your right needle. Knit the next stitch from the
left needle, then lift the previous stitch over it and off the
needle as before. Do this with each stitch until there are no
stitches on the left needle and just one stitch on the right
needle. Cut the yarn, leaving a 15 cm (6’’) end. With your
fingers, gently pull the tail through the last stitch and pull the
yarn tight to secure.
Work! Work! Work!
There are two main ways to ‘work’ stitches: they can be knitted
or purled. When the pattern asks you to ‘work’ a number of
stitches/rows/cm, it will always specify which stitch pattern to
work in.

TENSION
To ensure your knitting has the same measurements as the
pattern, it is a good idea to make a tension swatch before you
start knitting your project. A tension swatch is a small sample
of your knitting where you count the stitches and rows and
check them against the tension details given in the pattern.
If you get MORE stitches/rows than the pattern’s tension, it
means your knitting is tighter. If you get FEWER stitches/rows
than the pattern, your knitting is looser. Sometimes, it works
to knit tighter or looser to compensate.
When you make your swatch, make sure it is large enough for
you to measure 10 cm/4” without including the stitches/rows
closest to the edges (as these often have a slightly different
tension). When you’re done swatching, simply unravel and re-
use the yarn to start knitting your COCO JACKET.
Woven stitch
10 cm/4” = 12.5 stitches

HOW TO KNIT YOUR COCO JACKET
This jacket can be made in two sizes - S/M and M/L. When
the instructions differ between sizes, information is given for
the smaller size first, and then for the larger size in square
brackets (example: size S/M [size M/L] ).
BACK
1 Cast on 63 [71] stitches with Crazy Sexy Wool, using the
cable cast on technique.
2 Work in woven stitch to the end of the row, following the
instructions for row 1.
3 Work in woven stitch to the end of the row, following the
instructions for row 2.
4 Repeat steps 2 and 3 until your piece measures 48
cm/19” [53 cm/21”] from the cast on edge, ending with
a wrong side row (step 3). (This will be approximately 46
[50] rows.)
5 Cast off.
COCO JACKET
RIGHT FRONT
1 Cast on 33 [37] stitches using the cable cast on
technique.
2 Work in woven stitch to the end of the row, following the
instructions for row 1.
3 Work in woven stitch to the end of the row, following the
instructions for row 2.
4 Repeat steps 2 and 3 until your piece is 2 rows shorter
than the back piece. Your last row should be a wrong
side row (step 3).
5 Cast off the first 15 [17] stitches, then work to the end
of the row in woven stitch (follow the instructions for row
1, but leave out the slipped edge stitch).
6 Work in woven stitch, following the instructions for row
2, until you have just 1 stitch left. Purl the last stitch.
7 Cast off the remaining stitches.

LEFT FRONT
1 Cast on 33 [37] stitches using the cable cast on
technique.
2 Work in woven stitch to the end of the row, following
the instructions for row 2. (You must start on a wrong
side row to make sure the right and left front pieces are
‘mirrored’!)
3 Work in woven stitch to the end of the row, following the
instructions for row 1.
4 Repeat steps 2 and 3 until your piece is 2 rows shorter
than the back piece. Your last row should be a right side
row (step 3).
5 Cast off the first 15 [17] stitches, then work to the end
of the row in woven stitch (follow the instructions for row
2, but leave out the slipped edge stitch).
6 Work in woven stitch, following the instructions for row
1, until you have just 1 stitch left. Purl the last stitch.
7 Cast off the remaining stitches.
COCO JACKET
SLEEVES
Follow the instructions twice to make the left and the
right sleeve.
1 Cast on 51 [57] stitches using the cable cast on
technique.
2 Work in woven stitch to the end of the row, following the
instructions for row 1.
3 Work in woven stitch to the end of the row, following the
instruction for row 2.
4 Repeat steps 2 and 3.
5 Change to Jersey Be Good and repeat steps 2 and 3.
6 Change back to Crazy Sexy Wool and repeat steps 2
and 3.
7 Change to Jersey Be Good and repeat steps 2 and 3.
8 Change back to Crazy Sexy Wool, repeat steps 2 and
3 until your piece measures 38 cm/15” [40 cm/16”]
(approximately 36 [38] rows).
9 Cast off.

ASSEMBLING AND FINISHING
1 Place the two fronts on top of the back piece, wrong sides
facing each other. Thread your knitter’s sewing with a long
strand of yarn, and sew the shoulder seams together using the
horizontal invisible seam technique. Start at the point where
you cast off stitches for the neck edge, and work all the way to
the outside edge.

2 With right sides facing up, align the top edges of your
sleeves with the sewn-together front/back pieces. Use the
horizontal invisible seam technique to sew the sleeves to the
body.

3 Starting at the armhole, use the vertical invisible seam
technique to sew together the sides of the first sleeve. Next,
start at the armhole again and sew together the edges of the
front and back pieces.

4 Repeat for the other side.
5 Weave in the loose ends.

JOINING
VERTICAL INVISIBLE SEAM TECHNIQUE
This is used to join the side edges of two pieces together.
Place the two knitted pieces of fabric side by side with the
right sides up.
Insert your knitter’s needle under the first horizontal bar
between the first two stitches on the edge you want to join.
Pull the yarn through and insert the knitter’s needle through
the opposite horizontal bar on the other piece. Sew back and
forth through the horizontal bars along the edge. To tighten
the stitches, pull the yarn gently… and they will disappear.

HORIZONTAL INVISIBLE SEAM TECHNIQUE
This is used to join horizontal edges, such as cast on and
cast off edges. Align the two edges together, line up stitch
by stitch, insert the knitter’s sewing needle under a stitch on
the first edge and then under the corresponding stitch on the
other edge. Continue in this way until the seam is complete.

WEAVING IN THE ENDS
Weave the ends of your yarn into your knitting to finish it off
and stop it from unravelling.
Thread the tail onto the small knitter’s needle. Weave the
yarn along the edge of your knitting as shown in the diagram.
Where you have started a new ball, weave one tail in one
direction and the other tail in the opposite direction. Once you
have woven in approximately 10cm/4” then cut the tail.
