Ongoing Fight for Independence

( The Endless, or Auspicious, Knot, is a geometric symbol

Ultranationalism: An extreme form of nationalism.
Ultranationalists are often fanatically loyal to their own nation
and hostile and racist toward other nations.
Tibet should have the freedom to a
self-government and control over their
political affairs. To do so, China must
remove their military forces and government
power from, what they call, the Tibet
Autonomous Region.

Nationalism: The feeling of pride and devotion to one’s

country or the desire of a people to control their own
government free from foreign influence.

Self-Determination: The power to control one’s

own affairs. National self-determination is the
power of people within a nation-state or nation
to make their own decisions about what is in
their interest.

The Dalai Lamas are believed by Tibetan Buddhists to be manifestations of
Avalokiteshvara or Chenrezig, the Bodhisattva of Compassion and the
patron saint of Tibet. Bodhisattvas are realized beings, inspired by the
wish to attain complete enlightenment, who have vowed to be reborn in
the world to help all living beings.

In 1913, the 13th Dalai Lama released a

statement affirming Tibet’s nationalism.

“We are a small, religious, and

independent nation.”

At the time they released the statement,

The Build-Up
After the invasion in 1950, there was a
failed uprising against the Chinese. This
resulted in the 14th Dalai Lama fleeing
Tibet and setting up a government in exile
in India. Majority of the Tibetan
monasteries were destroyed in
1960-1970’s. More than 10,000 Tibetans
were killed in this time.

FIVE POINT PEACE PLAN:
( proposed by the Dalai Lama in 1987. )
1. Transformation of the whole of Tibet into a
zone of Ahimsa, demilitarized zone of peace and
non-violence.
2. Abandonment of China’s population transfer
policy, which threatened the very existence of the
Tibetans as a people.
3. Respect for the Tibetan people’s fundamental
human rights and democratic freedoms;
4. Restoration of and protection of Tibet’s natural
environment and abandonment of China’s use of
Tibet for the production of nuclear weapons and
dumping of nuclear waste;
5. Commencement of earnest negotiations on the
future status of Tibet and of relations between
the Tibetan and Chinese people.
“The Tibetan people are eager to contribute to regional and world peace, and I
believe they are in a unique position to do so. Traditionally, Tibetans are a peace
loving and non-violent people. Since Buddhism was introduced to Tibet over one
thousand years ago, Tibetans have practiced non-violence with respect to all forms
of life.”

India because of the close proximity to the Himalayas of Nepal.
