Abstract
One of the main branches existents in the IEEE is the Power & Energy Society, this society is
completely dedicated to make standards related to technology in the field of electrical energy,
the electric power industry, with the objective of provide to the members and the general
public to these standards to help them to develop technology.
Key words: PES, IEEE, Power & Energy Society.
IEEE PES 3
The Power & Energy Society is divided in many other branches and has a lot of
contributions of other bodies and colleges of engineers, even this society support other one’s
researches societies.

The PES as institution has as mission to goes like this: “To be the leading provider of
scientific and engineering information on electric power and energy for the betterment of
society, and the preferred professional development source for our members” (IEEE PES
Governing Board, 17 July 2003)
The main fields of action of the PES are the research, in designing and developing technology
for electric power systems, quality of energy and control systems in the electrical industry.

About Standards
The PES technical committees keep working in a series of documents of standardization to
the electrical field. These documents are divided in three main types: Standard,
Recommended Practice and Guide.
The last year the IEEE PES passed by a restructuration of the PES Technical Committee,
getting as result twenty committees: (IEEE PES Technical Council, 2016)
Intelligent Grid and Emerging Technologies Coordinating Committee
Marine Systems Coordinating Committee
Wind and Solar Power Coordinating Committee
Analytics Methods for Power Systems Committee
Electric Machinery Committee
Energy Development and Power Generation Committee
Energy Storage and Stationary Battery Committee
Insulated Conductors Committee
Nuclear Power Engineering Committee
Power System Communications and Cybersecurity Committee
Power System Dynamic Performance Committee
Power System Instrumentation and Measurements Committee
Power System Operations, Planning and Economics Committee
Power System Relaying and Control Committee
Smart Buildings, Loads and Customer Systems Committee
Substations Committee
Surge Protective Devices Committee
IEEE PES 5
Switchgear Committee
Transformers Committee
Transmission and Distribution Committee.

MISION AND COST OF MEMBRESHIP.
The mission of PES is to be the leading provider of scientific and engineering
information on electric power and energy for the betterment of society, and the preferred
professional development source for our members – Approved by the PES Governing Board,
17 July-2003.
• PES dues (2014): $35.00 per year
• IEEE dues (2014): $146 to $187 based on Region
The Power & Energy Society provides the world’s largest forum for sharing the latest
technological developments in the electric power industry, for developing standards that guide
the development and construction of equipment and systems, and for educating members of
the industry and the general public.
