Rental Car Code Guide
Rental Car Code Guide
Quick Reference
OVERVIEW
Car type codes are used to represent the many different vehicles that are offered by car associates at given rental locations. Having access to a
large number of car type codes provides the ability to request a wide variety of vehicle types and to be very specific about the types of vehicles
desired. For example, you can specify the number of doors, the type of fuel, or the number of passengers the vehicle should accommodate.
When requesting available car rental rates, you may include one or more car type codes to identify the vehicle type(s) and features in which your
customer is most interested. It is also important that you be able to recognize the car types that are returned in various informational displays, so that
you can correctly interpret the data.
These car type codes consist of specific 4-letter combinations. Each character represents a component that describes specific features or
characteristics of the rental vehicle.
First Category Generally describes the size of the vehicle, from mini/economy to full size/premium
2-door

Third Transmission/ Driver Identifies vehicle’s type of transmission and drive specification
Fourth Air Conditioning/Fuel Identifies if vehicle has air conditioning/no air conditioning
Type
Also includes the type of fuel that powers the vehicle, such as gas/petrol, diesel, electric,
hybrid, LPG, ethanol or hydrogen
Car type codes are defined by using one character, as shown from each of the four components below, reading from left to right. Examples: ECAR,
IFBR, SPMD. Use the help entry CARTYPEHELP to assist you with the use and interpretation of the various car type codes
When requesting car rates, you may either use a 4-letter code (SCAR) to specify category, type, transmission/drive, and air conditioning/fuel, or you
may use a 2-letter code (SC) that specifies only the category and type.

depending on which position it appears in the 4-letter car type code. Therefore, the order in which the characters are combined is critical to their
meaning.
