How do I choose German University?

There are various kinds of Universities in Germany. Most of these can be broadly categories into two
types.

 General Universities including Technology Universities: These universities are research-

oriented, which can offer a wide variety of subjects. These universities can award doctorate
degrees too.
 Universities of Applied Sciences: These are the practice-oriented Universities, which offer
courses mainly in engineering, business administration, social sciences and design. These
universities do not award doctorate degree, however a master degree holder and apply for
PhD at a university.

Eligibility

The eligibility criteria for all German universities is different, as all the universities are autonomous,
meaning they all have their own rules and regulations. Many universities ask students to submit their
GRE/GMAT scores at the time of application to engineering and management courses.
TOEFL/IELTS scores are also needed in case you have opted for an English taught course. In case
the course instruction is partially in German, students are required to submit TestDaF/DSH
certificates to prove their proficiency in the German language. Knowledge of German is not a
prerequisite if your programme is in English but a basic knowledge of the German language is
always good as it will help you in your day to day life in Germany.

Amazing Job Opportunities

Germany is the largest exporter of automobiles in the world and houses top car brands like Audi,
Porsche, BMW, Mercedes, etc. Making a career with such world leaders is like a dream coming true
for many students and Germany helps you achieve it in the form of extended visas! According to the
visa regulations, students who have completed their study in Germany can extend their visa up to 18
months to search for a suitable employment opportunity. The rules regarding visa and residence
permits and the EU Blue Card are also not that stringent as compared to other countries.

Work in Germany and EU Blue Card

The EU Blue Card enables third-country nationals who are university graduates or who have a
comparable qualification to receive a residence title for the purpose of employment suiting their
qualification.

The EU Blue Card is a residence permit which, when issued for the first time, is valid for a maximum
of four years. It is issued subject to the following conditions:

 a German or recognised foreign or comparable foreign higher educational qualification

 submission of an employment contract or a binding job offer
 as a matter of principle proof of a minimum annual gross salary of 48,400 Euro.
Exception: A lower salary threshold of 37,752 Euro is applied for EU Blue Cards issued to
scientists, mathematicians and engineers, as well as to doctors and IT specialists.
 restricted to a maximum of four years when first issued.
Exception: If the employment contract is shorter than four years, the residence title is issued
for a period that is limited to the term of the employment contract, plus three months.

Holders of an EU Blue Card are to be issued with an unlimited settlement permit if

 they have held their employment as a highly-qualified person for more than 33 months
 they can demonstrate that they have made obligatory contributions in this period or show
other proof of expenditure to obtain an entitlement to insurance benefits which are
comparable to those from statutory pensions insurance
 the other prerequisites generally necessary for issuing a settlement permit are met
If the holder of the EU Blue Card has an adequate knowledge of German (level B1), the settlement
permit is issued earlier, namely after 21 months
Low Cost

The cost varies according to the urban or rural setting of your university town/city and according to your
lifestyle. The living cost plus studying cost in Germany is very less as compared to other foreign
countries offering similar programmes. Apart from this, Germany also allows students to work while
pursuing their education. Foreign students are allowed to work for 120 full days or 240 half days in a
year. This has to be at par with the rules and regulations laid down in Germany and the students need a
prior permission before starting work. Various part time jobs are also available for students at the
universities and colleges where they study.

If you are looking for the best higher education and a rewarding career with the best industries in the
world, Germany is the place to be!
