SY-1 Build Instructions: Erratas/preparations

The document provides build instructions for 3 circuit boards that make up a modular synthesizer system. It details errors on board 1 that need fixes, such as incorrect resistor values. It then lists all the components needed for each board, including quantities of resistors, capacitors, transistors, headers, and integrated circuits. It provides instructions to test board 1 once built and connect boards 2 and 3 together. The document concludes with steps for finishing the build by trimming settings like noise level and VCO frequencies.

SY-1 build instructions (Updated November 7th 2016)

Erratas/preparations
There are a few errors on the PCBs, let’s fix them first.

Board 1:
- In the noise section don’t install the 10k next to the noise trimmer. Install a jumper
instead. Use some wire from one of the big 220uF electrolytic capacitors, for instance.
- The rate slider for the LFO might kill the LFO when it’s at bottom. Increase the 470Ω
resistor next to it to something between 560Ω and 1k depending on your preference.
This might not affect all builds. Might be a good idea to experiment with this at the end of
the build. 680 Ohms seems to be a good value in my builds.
- Two 220k resistors must be connected to ground when trimming the VCO2s. Mount
these so that the leg in question is easily accessible for an alligator cable clip. Look for
the two white arrows on the PCB.
Board 2 & 3:
Four resistors are marked with the wrong value on the PCB – 100k and 47k instead of 22k! See
image for their location, it shows the values to install. Install these now.

MISC AND HARDWARE

Jacks, trimmers, pots, pushbutton.

Wire “Point A” to “Point A” to normal both channels to output 1.

FINISHING UP
- Trim the noise level: Set OSC mode to A, and start with max noise level. Reduce until
noise no longer bleeds into the oscillator.
- Trim VCO2 frequency to 450Hz when VCO1 is tuned to 440Hz.
- Trim V/Oct.
- Find optimal resistor value for LFO at lowest speed (suggested 680 Ohm).
