FORMAL SUPPORT
1st Family Concern/Priority: Sarah and Joseph are concerned with Kitchi’s lack of

when his parents try and guess what he wants from them. Joseph and Sarah would like Kitchi to
learn different communication skills by going to a Speech Therapist so he can communicate his
needs.

Current Resource/Information: Joseph and Sarah are familiar with how children learn to communicate as
they have had two children before Kitchi. They have noticed the decline in eye contact, verbal
communication, and he no longer seeks their engagement.

communicate his needs to those around him.

INFORMAL SUPPORT
1st Family Concern/Priority: Sarah would like to see the needs of her child met, but she is concerned with
the things she has read online and wants to know strategies that have worked for other people and families
that deal with similar situations. Having a support group of people to help each other and let each other
know things that do and do not work would be very comforting for her especially with her husband no
longer living at home.

Current Resource/Information: Sarah does not have any current resources related to a support group that
can provide the encouragement and advice she is looking for. He two daughters provide as much support
as they can.
Outcome: Sarah will feel more confident in her abilities as a mother and will find other helpful tips that
can assist her in working with Kitchi and his behavioral concerns.

Suggested Action: Sarah will use a Facebook support group for moms with children with autism to gain
support and advice from other women around the world who are experiencing similar challenges as she is.

Rationale: Through this resource, Sarah can talk with other mothers and female caregivers that are
experiencing similar struggles and oppositions with working with their children. Sarah will be able to talk
with other women who can help to support her and give her the confidence she needs. This will benefit
the family as well because it has the potential to alleviate some of the stress Sarah might have allowing
her to be back to her regular upbeat self, which is a huge motivator for the family.

2nd Family Concern/Priority: The family would like to find a hobby or activity they can do with Kitchi to
possibly help calm him down in his times of tantrums. If they might be able to find an activity that helps
to reduce the frequency of those tantrums, then they might be able to get better help for him and reduce
the intensity of them as well. All of the various activities they try to engage him in do not spark his
interest or have previously been too overwhelming for him.
Current Resource/Information: The family has been using the internet for ideas and using past activities
that the older two girls enjoyed to do to help with trying to calm Kitchi down.

Outcome: Kitchi and Sarah will be able to attend weekly classes, in an environment with limited
stimulants, that will give Sarah ideas of activities to help Kitchi channel his energy and frustration. Sarah
will then be able to bring these activities into the home and teach the rest of the family these fun activities
that Kitchi has shown an interest in.

Suggested Action: Sarah and Kitchi will attend a Mommy & Me program where they can strengthen their
bond and spend time in activities for a few hours each week, while the girls are in school. This will help
Sarah to be able to identify activities that Kitchi is drawn to and activities that she can try out at home
with the family. The attendance is not mandatory each day; should there be a time when Sarah feels that
Kitchi’s behavior is not appropriate for a classroom, she can choose to sit the day out and try another time
to attend the class, she also would not be required to attend throughout the whole duration of the time
should Kitchi’s attention and behavior change.

support for families with the unexpected diagnosis of and ongoing impact of childhood
disabilities. It offers support to help the families and primary caregivers of special needs and
disabled children to reduce their stress levels, prevent child abuse and neglect, diminish feelings
of isolation, and assist them in accessing health services.
● Applications/Forms: N/A -- Call or email to enroll
● Pamphlets/Handouts: Print out of the webpage-- see attached.

Rationale: By attending Mommy & Me, Kitchi will not only find activities that draw his interest, but he
will also be creating a better bond with his mother. In this classroom, he will have opportunities to work
with activities that are sensitive to his senses and will not provide an overload for him. He will be able to
explore and play in an environment that allows for his freedom and will limit the stimulants that can
provoke his tantrums. Through finding those activities, the family can implement them in their home to
help with Kitchi’s behavioral concerns.

MATERIAL SUPPORT
1st Family Concern/Priority: The family is in search of toys or objects that will provide help to Kitchi
either as a distraction or a channel of energy. With his tantrums, having something tangible he can use to
calm down around him would be useful. They believe that they might be able to find a toy that can help to
harness his need for sensory processing, which will reduce tantrums and severity.

Current Resource/Information: Joseph and Sarah have heard that there are certain toys that help children
when they become overwhelmed with the environment.

Outcome: Kitchi will be able channel his energy into this toy. Having his senses focused on this object
will help distract him from his environment and the things in his environment that may bother him. When
he is feeling overwhelmed by his environment he can use this toy as a positive output of energy instead of
having a tantrum.

Suggested Action: The Locklear family will purchase an inflatable rocking toy. When Kitchi becomes
overwhelmed with what is happening in his environment, he will be able to use the toy to help him calm
down.

● Pamphlets/Handouts: See attachment
Rationale: This toy was created ideally for children with sensory processing and autism spectrum
disorders. Kitchi will be able to use it for both fun and for calming. The rocking motion of this sensory
toy will provide him with a calming feeling while he is able to use his motor skills and get his energy out
in a healthy way.

2nd Family Concern/Priority: The family would like to find something that is going to provide help with
feeding time with Kitchi. They are concerned that he is not eating properly for his needs and there is very
limited things that he will eat. If they are able to find a resource that can help with providing a better
dietary plan for him, they believe it will also help with tantrums and anger issues.
Current Resource/Information: Sarah knows that Kitchi is extremely sensitive to food textures, and he is
not eating many solid foods.

Outcome: Kitchi will begin to eat different types of foods to improve his dietary needs, and he will begin
to eat solid foods.

Suggested Action: Sarah will purchase a recipe book that guides families through the process of slowly
introducing new foods to children using an approach called STEPS+. By following the steps in this book
Kitchi and his family can have more successful meal times; they can enjoy their time together while
eating and Kitchi can widen his palet.
