The Nervous System - Worksheet #1

The nervous system is comprised of the central nervous system and peripheral nervous system. It controls the body's voluntary and involuntary actions. Neurons communicate with each other via electrical and chemical signals - an action potential travels along the axon and triggers the release of neurotransmitters at the synapse which bind to receptors on the next neuron. The knee-jerk reflex and withdrawal from pain work unconsciously through a reflex arc involving sensory and motor neurons without involving the brain.
