Grade Level: 2 Subject: Music
Lesson Aim/Objective: Students will use body percussion
(marching/patting/clapping) to demonstrate a steady beat while singing
using their head voice.
Materials:
- Eleanor poem
- Apple Tree Song
Common Core Standards:
1.6 Steady beat
2.2.1 Singing melodic patterns that move up, down, and stay the same.
2.2.3 Increasing pitch accuracy while singing simple songs.
2.4.1/2 Using body percussion and aural skills to demonstrate steady
beat.
Instruction/Procedure:
1. Greeting at the door with instructions to form a circle in room.
2. Re-introduce/re-teach Eleanor using pat/clap steady beat.
3. Go around the circle, and have each student say a candy in rhythm,
and students will echo it.
4. Brain break: Hokey Pokey stretch (simplified Hokey Pokey)
5. Find new spot in the circle (not sitting next to distractions)
6. Teach Apple Tree song through echoing
- Sing song while marching in a circle
7. Teach Apple Tree game demonstrating with a student as the tree.
- Play a practice round or two.
8. Play the game, teacher being the other half of each new tree. There
should be time for 3 or 4 whole games.

9. Return to normal seats at 11:35/36 and line up based on which row is
sitting the quietest.
10. Play Simon Says until teacher gets there/or dismiss them down the
ramp.
Assessment Activity:
Eleanor: Students will say their candy name in a rhythm (and not just
say it like in conversation) and write their candy rhythm using correct
notation (next class).
Apple Tree Song: Students will sing in their head voice, and be able to
sing the sol-mi-la-sol-do pattern in the song, while marching (or using
other body percussion) to a steady beat.
Accommodations:
- Switch to different body percussion if the pat/clap is too easy. Scale
it back if it becomes too hard.
- Simplify the Apple Tree game if this version is too complicated.
Follow Up:
Finish Eleanor activity next class.
Apple Tree will be used as a musical activity throughout the school
year.
