Introductions.
Introductions are the first phrases we say when we meet someone new. They are an
important part of small talk - what we say when we meet people at parties. These
phrases are different than the phrases we use when we greet friends. Read these
phrases and practice them in these short conversations.
There are a number of phrases that are commonly used to introduce strangers
When you are introduced to someone, you do a lot of English that has nothing to do with
grammar or vocabulary. This is a type of English that English people use all the time
without noticing it, and you do the same thing in your language. In English we call this
"reading between the lines". In advanced English it is not enough to understand what
people say. You must understand what they mean. If you are still not sure about what I
want to say, read on ..
It is very common to meet new people and introduce yourself (tell the person
who you are). Although this seems a very simple thing to do (you can just say
'hi, I'm Simon' 'hi Simon, I'm Claire'), in the English-speaking world politeness
is very important and there are phrases which are used to make an
introduction politer or more formal. And these phrases change depending on
the situation (you use different phrases when introducing yourself to a stranger
than when introducing yourself to somebody you have spoken to on the
telephone before).
In addition to these phrases, when you meet somebody for the first time, it is
polite to shake hands. But it is not common in the English-speaking world for
people to kiss each other on the cheek in introductions. Also, it is polite after
being introduced to use small talk (e.g. 'terrible weather isn't it?', 'who do work
for?' etc...), to show that you are interested in the other person.
In this online exercise on introduction phrases, we will look at formal English
phrases that are used to both introduce yourself to other people and when
somebody introduces themself to you. We will also look at phrases that are
used after the introduction to continue the conversation. In this part, we will
look at phrases used in situations when meeting strangers. Although the
vocabulary used here is focused on business and formal situations, it can also
be used in less formal situations as well.
