Central America Project

Mexico
Mexico is located south of the U.S. and has a
diverse landscape that contains many tourist
destinations.

Some things to know about Mexico:

1. Mexico has a big population, with


around 121 million people.
2. Mexico is 761,600 square miles
3. In mexico, taxes can be paid with
artwork. Also the tallest pyramid is not
in Egypt, but rather in Mexico.
Guatemala
Guatemala is south of Mexico and adjacent to
Belize. Comparatively small to mexico but it
does not lack in tourist attractions.

Some things to know about Guatemala:

1. Guatemala is a constitutional
democratic republic
2. Guatemala is 42,042 Square Miles
3. It has a population of 15.47 million
4. It has vast rainforests and many ancient
mayan sites.
5. While it is pretty small, it has around 30
active volcanoes.
El Salvador
El Salvador is located South of Guatemala and
is known for it beaches. It may be small than
Guatemala but it is still just as intriguing.

Facts to know about Salvador:

1. It has a very mountainous landscape


and beautiful beaches.
2. It has around 7 million residents
3. It is one of the few countries
experiencing reforestation
4. The United States are El Salvador’s
largest trading partner.
Nicaragua
Nicaragua is set between the Caribbean
ocean and Pacific ocean. Located South of El
salvador and Honduras.

Things to know about Nicaragua:

1. Some of Nicaragua’s main exports


include cheese, cane, textiles, meat and
coffee.
2. It’s population is 8.05 million.
3. It’s government is republic and its
currency is Cordoba.
4. Their economy is based on agriculture,
manufacturing and mining.
Costa Rica
Costa Rica is located below Nicaragua and is
between the Pacific and Atlantic ocean. It’s
terrain is very diverse. It has mountains, hills,
forests, wetlands, plains and volcanoes!

Things to know about Costa Rica:

1. Its population is 4.872 million people


2. A quarter of its land is made up of a
jungle that is filled with many animals
and insects.
3. Costa Rica is the only country in the
southern hemisphere without a military
or army.
Panama
Panama is south of Costa Rica and just like its
neighboring country it is in between Pacific
and Atlantic ocean.

Things to know about Panama:

1. It is a Constitutional Democracy.
2. It is currently one of 45th largest goods
trading partner.
3. Panama is slightly smaller than South
Carolina with 29,157 square miles.
4. Though their official currency is Balboa,
they use U.S paper currency.
Belize
Belize is the comparatively small as compared
to the other countries in Central America. It is
also a host to many ancient mayan ruins.

Things to know about Belize:

1. Their Currency is the Belize Dollar.


2. Their population is at around 331,990
people.
3. It is a Constitutional Monarchy.
4. The only country to create a jaguar
nature preserve.
Honduras
Honduras is adjacent to El Salvador and
Guatemala. It’s capital is Tegucigalpa.

Things to know about Honduras:

1. Their national mammal is the white-


tailed deer and their national bird is the
macaw
2. It was founded on September 15, 1821
3. Honduras is 43,278 square miles
4. There are no active volcanoes in
Honduras.
5. Honduras exports items such as Coffee
and Bananas.
The Bahamas
The Bahamas is an Archipelago with around
700 islands, and some smaller lands that
remain uninhabited.

Things to know about The Bahamas:

1. Its population is 377,374 people


2. It is a Parliamentary Democracy
3. 80% of their food is imported
4. Just like Australia, The Bahamas have
many coral reefs surrounding the
islands.
5. There is an island called Cat island in the
Bahamas.
Cuba
Cuba is an island in the Atlantic Ocean. It is
located near Haiti.

Things to know about Cuba:

1. The main crops in Cuba are tobacco and


sugar.
2. There is a prehistoric fish that can only
be found in Cuba called Mangar.
3. It is a Communist state
4. The capital and largest city in Cuba is
Havana.
5. Cuba’s population is 11.27 million
people
Dominican Republic
The Dominican Republic is bordered with
Haiti. It has many types of terrains. Like many
nearby countries, the main language is
Spanish.

Things to know about the Dominican


Republic:

1. Their currency is the Dominican Peso.


2. Tropical Storms are a constant hazard
due to the fact that they are located in
the Hurricane belt.
3. The United States is the Dominican
Republic’s most important trade
partner.
4. It’s Capital is Santo Domingo
Haiti
Haiti shares the same island with The
Dominican Republic. It is located on the
Atlantic Ocean.

Things to know about Haiti:

1. Haiti is a Republic with an elected


government
2. The capital and largest city in Haiti is
port-au-prince.
3. Haiti is mostly hot and humid.
4. Most of Haiti is rugged and
mountainous
5. Haiti is the poorest country in the
Western Hemisphere.
Puerto Rico
Puerto Rico is yet another island on the
Atlantic Ocean. Puerto Rico’s climate is
tropical and as a result it has year round
summers.

Things to know about Puerto Rico:

1. Puerto Rico is 3,515 square miles.


2. San Juan is the capital of Puerto Rico.
3. It became part of the United States in
1898.
4. The most popular sports in Puerto Rico
are boxing, volleyball and basketball.
5. It’s landscape consists of Green
mountains, waterfalls and tropical
forests
Jamaica
Jamaica is located south of Cuba and close to
Haiti. It is well known for being the
“birthplace” of Reggae style music.

Things to know about Jamaica:

1. It has many rainforests and Reef lined


beaches.
2. Jamaica has 2.715 residents
3. Their currency is the Jamaican Dollar.
4. Jamaica is 4,244 square miles.
5. The capital of Jamaica is Kingston
6. Jamaica is a Constitutional Monarchy
