DIFFERENCE BETWEEN TONE AND MOOD
Tone and Mood are literary elements integrated in
literary works. Identifying the tone and mood in
literatures is an important clue to discover the
literary‘s theme. Considering how the author creates
a tone and mood helps the reader understand and
appreciate the author‘s style.
TONE
Tone is a manner, a feeling or atmosphere the author has
meant to set in the story, or towards a subject. It can also
be considered as the attitude or feeling of the writer
towards a subject. The tone can be revealed by the
author‘s choice of words and details. The author may use a
negative or positive tone for his work. Some possible
adjectives to describe a tone, are seriousness, bitterness,
joyful, humorous, amusing, angry, ironic, suspicious, and
many more.
TONE
The following are some examples of “tone‟ in
sentences:
a. I‘d rather stay here and wait, than go into that dark
room.
The sentence above imposes that the person is scared.

person is happy or excited.

MOOD
Mood is the feeling or atmosphere perceived by
the reader. It is the emotions you feel while reading.
The mood indicates a prevailing feeling, or frame of
mind, especially at the start of the story. It creates a
sense of expectation to readers of what is to follow.
All the choices for setting, images, objects and
details contribute in creating a mood.
MOOD
The following are some examples of “mood‟ in
sentences:
a. The night was dark and stormy.
The sentence gives you a scary ‘mood‘.

The sentence gives you a feeling of anger, or pity
towards the cat.

THE TALE OF CHUNHYANG
Once there lived in the province of Cholla, in the
town of Namwon, a magistrate’s son named Ni Mong-
Yong. While walking with his Pangja in a field, he
caught sight of the beautiful girl named Ch’unyang
and fell in love with her. Soon, he went to her home and
asked the girl’s mother for her hand in marriage.

Because Ch’unhyang’s mother was a kisaeng, they
had to marry in secret. Not long after their secret
marriage, a servant brought Yi Mong-Yong a message
saying that his father, newly appointed to the King’s
cabinet, was being recalled to the capitol.

Yi Mong-Yong had to accompany his father and so he
went that evening to Ch’unhyang to tell her the bad
news. After Ch’unyhang gave him a ring to symbolize
her love for him, the two tearfully parted at the Magpie
bridge.

The new Namwon magistrate arrived and summoned
Ch’unhyang to be his wife. Ch’unhyang refused as she
is committed to her husband. Her defiance made the
magistrate angry so he ordered her to be taken to
prison and sentenced to death.

Yi Mong-Yong, newly appointed as a high official,
returned to Namwon and learned of the situation. He
dressed himself as a beggar to enter the palace during
a feast given by the new Namwon magistrate. He
revealed himself and banished the evil magistrate to a
faraway land. He was able to save his wife from a
miserable death

Yi Mong-Yong took his bride to Seoul and presented her
to his parents. They accepted her as a daughter-in-law.
Later, Ch’unhyang bore three sons and two daughters,
and they lived happily for many years to come.
