Environmental Science: Population Dynamics

This document discusses human population growth and dynamics. It provides data on global population figures from 1650 to present day, showing steady growth over time from 0.5 billion people in 1650 to the current figure of 7.5 billion. Advances in medicine, food supply, and lack of family planning are cited as factors contributing to population increase. The importance of population censuses for governments to allocate resources is explained, with censuses typically conducted every 10 years to gather data on demographics, housing, and infrastructure needs.

Environmental Science:

Population Dynamics
Lecture Outline
• To observe past trends in Human Population
Growth.
• To understand & appreciate the need to study
human population.
• To understand ‘Population Census’.
Activity 1: To observing Human Population
growth Through history
Year A.D. No. of People (in billions)
Instructions:
1650 0.5
• Place time on the x axis. 1750 0.7
• Values should range 1850 1
1925 2
from 1650 to 2020. 1956 2.5
• Place no. of people (in 1966 3.3
billions) on the y axis. 1970 3.6
1975 3.9
• Ensure that you label 1976 4
your axis and write a 1980 4.5
title! 1991 5.5
2000 6
2004 6.4
Analysis
• You should have drawn a graph like this…
Present world Population Statistics
• The Current World Population is 7.5 billion as
of April 2017.

• The Most Populous Country is China

(1,379,302,771).

• China had the highest CO2 Emissions (in 2015)

with 9040.74 (millions) [metric tons].
World population – projection to 2050
What factors accounts for such a significant
increase in growth?
• Advances in medical science  people are living
longer and there are treatments to prevent
death from disease and other conditions.

• More reliable food supplies due to the

‘Agricultural or Green Revolution’.

• In many parts of the world, there is an overall

lack of family planning, hence couples are
having a lot of children.
Think Point
• Why would it be beneficial to the government
of a country to know the total population
statistics?
• By knowing how many people there are, and
where they live: the government can then
adequately allocate funds to different sectors
of the society.

• Such as Education, Health, Infrastructure and

other amenities.

• This is achieved by conducting a Population

Census.
Population Census
• This is a count of every person and building in
the country.

• It also investigates characteristics such as age,

sex, religion, education and occupation as well
as where people live, housing, and access to
water.
When is this done?
• The Census is conducted every 10 years in
each country.

• Why? Because it is such a large survey, it is

expensive and involves great preparation
(workers, collation of data, public cooperation,
et cetera). This cannot be done as frequently
due to the logistics involved.
• The last census for Trinidad and Tobago was
conducted between January 9th – May 31st
2011.

• The Total population for Trinidad and Tobago

was 1,328,019 (exclusive of non – nationals
and visitors).
