INTRODUCTION
• What is Motor?
It is a machine that converts electrical energy to
mechanical energy.
It may be DC or AC depending upon the type of power
supply.
DC motors are of two types-
i) Brushed motor –with brushes and commutator
and
ii) Brushless motor- without brushes.
What is commutator & brushes
• Commutator is a mechanical rectifier which
converts alternating voltage into direct voltage.
• It is made of copper segment & insulated from
each other by mica sheets and mounted on the
shaft of the motor.
• Brushes is used to ensure
• the electrical contact between commutator
• and external load circuit.
• It is made of carbon and rest
• On the commutator
Introduction
• Brushless d.c. motor has no brushes & commutator.
• Conventional d.c. motors have two principle problem.
• 1) require periodic maintenance to repair & replace the
brushes.
• 2) electrical arc produced by commutator brush arrangement
limit the operating speed & voltage of the motor.
• Therefore the motor that retains the characteristics of a d.c.
motor but eliminates the commutator and brushes, is called
brushless d.c. motor.
• These motor uses the electronic commutator, such as
transistors & thyristors.
Construction
• A brushless d.c. motor consist of multiphase
winding wound on a non-salient stator & p.m.
rotor.
• Voltage applied to the individual phase
winding through a sequential switching. The
switching is done electronically using power
transistors or thyristors.
Working of BLDC
CONTINUE…….
• If winding1 is energized, the PM rotor aligns
with the magnetic field produced by winding1.
• when winding1 is switched off and winding2 is
turned on, the rotor is made to rotate to align
with the magnetic field produced by winding2.
• Thus by applying the voltage to individual
phase winding, the motor rotation can be
achieved.
Advantages of Brushless Motor
Advantages over conventional d.c. motor.
1) Require little or no maintenance.
2) Longer operating life.
3) More efficient than conventional d.c. motor.
4) Very reliable.
5) Capable of rotating at speed greater than 40,000 r.p.m.
conclusion
This motor is now widely used in biomedical and
aerospace fields.
• In this way we have studied the construction
and working principle of brushless d.c. motor.
