CERVICAL CANCER

_ Cervical cancer is the fourth most common cancer in


women.

_ In 2018, an estimated 570 000 women were diagnosed


with cervical cancer worldwide and about 311 000 women
died from the disease ( according to WHO).

_ Cervical cancer occurs when abnormal cells in the lining


of the cervix grow in an uncontrolled way and form a
growth (tumour).

_ Cervical cancer most likely to become cancerous in the


transformation zone.
Types of cervical cancer
Squamous cell cancer - from the skin-like cells of the ectocervix (70% - 80% of cases)
Adenocarcinoma - from glandular cells of the endocervix (20% of cases)
Adenosquamous carcinoma - features of both squamous cell carcinomas and adenocarcinomas
(5% - 6% of cases)

Prevention
_ Cervical Screening Tests: Pap smear
and other tests (VIA, VILI, HPV)
_ HPV (human papilloma virus) vaccine
_ Limiting the number of sex partners
_ Practicing safe sex by using condoms
and dental dams
_ Quit smoking
