Transfer Case Basics for Students

The document discusses transfer cases, their functions and components. It explains that a transfer case transfers power from the transmission to the front and rear axles using gears, hydraulics or chain drive. The main components are the input shaft, encoder motor, front and rear output shafts, clutch assembly and clutch lever. The types of transfer cases include part-time 4WD, full-time 4WD and active 4WD. CV joints and universal joints connect the transmission to the driveshaft and allow power to be transmitted to the axles.

Transfer case
Function and components of a transfer case

A transfer case is a part of

the drivetrain of four-wheel-
drive, all-wheel-drive, and other
multiple powered axle vehicles.
The transfer case transfers power
from the transmission to the front
and rear axles by means of drive
shafts.
Function
The transfer case receives power from the
transmission and sends it to both the front and rear
axles, or just one (usually the rear.) This can be
done with gears, hydraulics, or chain drive.
Component

• Input shaft
• Transfer case encorder
motor
• Front outpout shaft
• Drive chain
• Rear output shaft
• Clutch assembly
• Clutch lever
Component
Types
• The basics types are:}
1) Part-time 4WD
2) Full-time 4WD
3) Active 4WD

Also we have:
• Drive chain design
1)It is usually used with planetary gearsets
2)Is the most common design
• Gear type
1)Uses only gear-sets to transfer the power
2) Stronger and more durable
Drive type

Gear-driven

Gear-driven transfer
cases use sets of gears
to drive either the front
or both the front and
rear driveshafts.
Chain-driven

Chain-driven transfer cases use a chain to drive

most often only one axle but can drive both axles.
Chain-driven transfer cases are quieter and lighter
than gear-driven ones.
CVJ and universal joints.
Universal and constant-
velocity (CV) joints connect
your transmission to your
driveshaft and allow
rotational power to be sent
to your axles.
Where they differ is how
they’re able to transmit this
energy.
CVJ
CONSTANT-VELOCITY JOINTS

CV joints are designed to keep velocity

constant regardless of their operational
angle.
This varies based on what type of CV joint is
being used.
UNIVERSAL JOINTS
A U-joint looks like a cross, with four cylindrical
points. These points connect via a yoke with bearing
caps. The U-joint is then held in place with a c-clip,
internal snap ring, or full-circle snap ring
UNIVERSAL JOINTS

U-joints are used in several locations.

They connect the transfer case to the
front and rear differential in a 4WD
vehicle.
They’re also used in vehicles with a
solid front axle to connect the inner
and outer axle shafts.
