What is E-Waste ?
• Electronic waste or E-Waste describes
discarded electrical or electronic devices.
• Used electronics which are destined for
reuse, resale, recycling or disposal are
considered as E-Waste.
Sources of E-Waste?
• Waste generated from the products used for
data processing such as computers,
computers devices like monitors, keyboards,
printers.
• Electronic devices used for entertainment
like TV’s, DVD’s and video players.
• Devices used for communication like
phones, mobiles, landline phones, etc.
• Household equipment like vacuum cleaner,
microwave ovens, washing machines, air
conditions, etc.
Effects of E-Waste on Environment
• Emissions from E-Waste
create environmental
damage.
• These are non-biodegradable
and also cause soil pollution.
• E-Waste dumping yards and
nearby places are polluted
and cause health hazards.
How these become E-Waste
• Advancements in technology.
• Changes in style fashion and status.
• Nearing the end of their useful life.
• Not taking precautions while
handling them.
Methods of disposal of E-Waste
THE MOST IMPORTANT METHOD IS RECYCLING
• Disassembly: It is the systematic removal of components,
parts from a product in E-Waste.
• Upgrading: Methods to recover materials include
incineration and refining.
• Material Recovery: The materials are recovered by
recycling facilities. The glass, metals, plastic can be
recovered.
Why E-Waste Management?
To Prevent:
• Pollution of ground water.
• Acidification of soil.
• Emission of toxic fumes and gases.
• It is fast growing portion of municipal waste.
• Releases harmful gases into air.
Statistic’s
• According to statistic’s, we are generating
more than 40 million tons of E-Waste a
year and only 27% of this wate is recycled.
• India is ranked 5th position in the
generation of E-Waste.
• Majority of the waste comes from the
mobile phones.
Conclusion
• E-Waste has emerged as one of the fastest growing waste
streams world wide.
• Electronic gadgets, without proper disposal can cause
environmental harm.
• Reuse and Recycle are more beneficial than simple
disposal.
• Awareness of E-Waste should be given.
• Government shall take steps to reduce E-Waste disposal.
