and involves participants with complex physical skills who are motivated to perform by
various factors.

FACTORS AFFECTING PARTICIPATION IN PHYSICAL ACTIVITY &
SPORTS
 AGE- Different age groups may have different interests.
 INTERESTS- Personal choices and preferences.
 SOCIAL FACTORS–Family/community tradition, culture, finances, time, occupation.
 AVAILABILITY OF FACILITIES- Access to facilities e.g. fields, court, stadium may be easier for some than others.
 THE ENVIRONMENT-Caribbean people won’t take part in ice hockey or snow boarding because of the environment.
 OPPORTUNITIES- Your background may allow experience and exposure to different sports than others.
BENEFITS OF PARTICIPATING IN SPORTS & PHYSICAL ACTIVITY
 Creates an opportunity for competition.
 Allows mixing and socializing with different people.
 Encourages friendships.
 Encourages positive traits such as sportsmanship and co-operation.

AMATEUR SPORTS VS. PROFESSIONAL SPORTS
 AMETEUR SPORTS –The athletes take part for leisure and stress relief in their free
  time. They play with friends or sometimes join clubs.
 PROFESSIONAL SPORTS –Athletes take part because it is their job, and they
  receive financial payment and some other benefits.
