Water Polo

Made by Armin
Basics
• 7(6+1) vs. 7 competitive ball game
• The game consists of 4 quarters
• It is (obviously) played in a deep pool
• All field players take on both offensive and
defensive roles
• The special equipment includes a water polo ball,
numbered and colored caps, and two goalpoasts,
which are floating on the water
Positions
• The 6-6 field players both play offensive, and
defensive roles
• Unlike many common sports, positions are not very
tied
• Some players will fill several roles, as situations
require
• The positions usually(!) consist of center forward
center back, two wings and two drivers
• Left handed people often needed in both teams for a
two sided attack
Rules
• All rules are similar throughout the world, although
slight variations are possible in each governing
body and region
• Governing bodies include FINA(international),
NCAA(US), and IOC(Olympic sports rules)
• The rules often get some innovation, to make the
game quicker
• Because of the large number of rules, and the
rough gameplay, it’s frequently called one of the
most difficult sports
Gameplay
• Every quarter starts with trying to be the first to
reach the ball, which is in the very middle of the
pool
• As one of the teams gets the ball, their attack time
starts to go down from 30 seconds (to 0)
• After the first two quarters (=the first half) the two
teams swap their side of the pool, so to be fair
• Besides the two referees, next to the pool is the
jurys’ table, where the inspector, the secretary and
the time-keeper sits
Major competitions
• Men’s water polo was the first olympic team sport to
be introduced in 1900
• Hungary first participated in the olympic games of the
year 1912
• Since then our national team has officially become the
world’s most successful team
• Hungary is now a 9-time Olympic winner, 3-time
World Champion and a 13-time European Champion
• In the national championship the most successful
teams are UTE, FTC, Vasas SC, Szolnoki Dózsa, and OSC
