BSEE202011
Introduction:
1.Poem written by Erin
Hanson
2. A brief idea about what
is society
3..Highlights the influence
of society on an individual
4.boundaries a society
defines for a person.
Welcome to society,
We hope you enjoy your stay,
And please feel free to be yourself,
As long as it's in the right way,
Make sure you love your body,
Not too much or we'll tear you down,
We'll bully you for smiling,
And then wonder why you frown,
We'll tell you that you're worthless,
That you shouldn't make a sound,
And then cry with all the others,
As you're buried in the ground,
You can fall in love with anyone,
As long as it's who we choose,
And we'll let you have your opinions,
But please shape them to our views,
Welcome to society,
We promise that we won't deceive,
And one more rule now that you're here,
There's no way you can leave
Welcome to society
We hope you enjoy your stay
In the first line , society is welcoming a newborn. As soon as a
baby is born the society starts making sure that he realizes the
importance of a society and starts adopting things it has decided
for him. The second sentence highlights the hypocritical nature of
the society. On one side it’s telling him that as now he is born he
is bound to many rules and regulations of a society and on the
other hand is asking him to enjoy it.
What is a society ?
A society is a group of individuals involved in persistent social
interaction, or a large social group sharing the same spatial or
social territory, typically subject to the same political authority
and dominant cultural expectations.

*And where expectations come, things become complicated ,

especially LIFE.
And please feel free • These two lines actually summarize the
to be yourself, whole poem .
As long as it's in the • First , the society is trying to portray itself
right way, as a welcoming host, while also laying
down a list of commands
• It’s claiming to let people live freely, but
have the most strict limits on one’s societal
liberty.
• It’s restricting him to follow the so called
social norms which are the accepted
standards of behavior of social groups
• And it’s pointing out that it is the actual
authority to determine what’s right and
what is wrong
Make sure you love your body,
Not too much or we'll tear you down,
We'll bully you for smiling,
And then wonder why you frown,

Here the society is telling him that self

love is encouraged but beware that
people envy those with much confidence
.
Further, the two lines highlight the
bullying nature of society , the way it
always judge around , get jealous of your
happiness , constantly trying to make
you scowl. But at the end when you get
angry and depressed they’ll get even
more disgusting.
We'll tell you that you're worthless,
That you shouldn't make a sound,
And then cry with all the others,
As you're buried in the ground,
The society is quite unpredictable and strange.
Throughout your life it will make you feel that your existence
doesn’t matter at all and maybe many of you must have heard
this at least once in your lifetime that you shouldn’t have been
born . Also, at many stages the society doesn’t allow you to
express your opinions and thoughts even when there’s a crucial
need for you to do so and tells you that you’re insignificant. But
as soon as you die, you suddenly become important, people
remember the moments they have spent with you, realize how
important you were , talk about all the qualities you had and
above all mourn your death. But all of this , is of no use at that
time because you are deep inside the ground, unable to hear the
whispers of the society and unable to celebrate your success of
being acknowledged by people.
You can fall in love with anyone,
As long as it's who we choose,
And we'll let you have your opinions,
But please shape them to our views,
Here it becomes intense, when you have no control over your
emotions but are bound to give up on many things you can’t
even imagine your life without. You just can’t break the norms,
either it’s love which is unintentional or a sensible commitment.
Although, everyone tells you that it’s ok to be in love but in
reality it is not alright. You’re limited by a set of definitions
called caste , religion, race, language , nationality ,ethnicities
and cultures ,which narrows your choice and trains you how to
tame your feelings accordingly.
Even the clothes you wear, the thoughts you have about
anything , the way you speak , the food you eat and many other
things should be according to the society otherwise, there will
be a long line of people out there ready to judge you.
Welcome to society,
We promise that we won't deceive,
And one more rule now that you're here,
There's no way you can leave
Finally, it again reminds us that you’ve landed in the world
dominated by society which you can’t exit now at any cost. Either
you become obstinate or mold yourself according to the norms,
but there’s no way you can escape from it.
It is also promising that it won’t let you down if you’re up to its
standards.
But still as mentioned earlier society is a hypocrite it won’t let you
live peacefully. It has no proper rules for its judgmental procedure,
it is always ready to impose their opinions on you and doesn’t get
satisfied by anyone at any cost .

Concluding the poem , I’ll share my point of view that to survive

It’s important to follow the social norms. But nothing should
hinder our progress , no criticism should affect us deeply and no
one’s opinion should overcome our mental ability. We can never
make each and everyone happy and it’s not an obligation to take
care of everyone’s thoughts. But what’s necessary is the inner
peace of one’s self and the happiness of the one’s who care for us,
who love us , our family and our closed ones.

there are only individuals”
