Comedy
Comedy is a type or genre of drama that is intended to make
people laugh. However, humour is not the only quality that
signifies a comedy.

Examples:
The Old Couple
Pride and Prejudice
The Importance of Being Earnest
Farce
Farce is a humorous play in which the characters
become involved in complicated and unlikely situations

Examples:
The Comedy of Errors
The Taming of the Shrew
Tragedy

Tragedy is a type of literature, especially drama, that is


serious and sad, and often ends with the death of the main
character.

Examples:
Romeo and Juliet is a tragedy written by William
Shakespeare; Arthur Miller's Death of a Salesman
Tragi-comedy

Tragi-comedy are more than just tragedy and comedy blended


together, usually with the tragic predominating. It is a play or other
written work that is both sad and amusing.

Examples:
Samuel Beckett’s Endgame (1958)
Harold Pinter’s The Dumb-Waiter (1960)
Melodrama
Melodramas are an exaggerated kind of drama in literature, in
which conventional one-dimensional characters such as
heroes, heroines, and villains contend with exciting,
passionate, and frequently deadly situations.
Examples:
Big Fish (2003),
Moulin Rouge (2001),
Ghost (1990)
Opera
An opera is a type of drama where the actors sing the lines or
dialogues instead of speaking them.

Examples:
Mark-Anthony Turnage The Silver Tassie (2002)
Tobias Picker Emmeline (1996)
Oliver Knussen Higglety Pigglety Pop! (1985)
Musical
Musicals are different from opera. While lines in opera are sung,
dialogues in musicals are infused with music and performances.

Examples:
Miss Saigon
Les Miserables
Phantom of the Opera
