Presentation 1

Land conservation is essential for protecting ecosystems and biodiversity while ensuring resources for future generations. Key barriers include land use conflicts, climate change, and weak policy enforcement. Successful examples, such as Costa Rica's reforestation efforts, demonstrate the effectiveness of strict conservation laws and community initiatives.

SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT

LAND
CONSERVATION
introduction

Land conservation is the practice of

protecting natural land to ensure its
longevity and health. It helps maintain
biodiversity, protect ecosystems, and
ensure resources for future generations.
It aims to protect ecosystems,
biodiversity, and prevent overexploitation
of natural resources. Land conservation
also refers to the preservation,
protection, or restoration of natural land.
Barriers to land conservation

• Land Use Conflicts: Agriculture, urban development

vs. conservation.
• Climate Change: Rising temperatures affect
conservation efforts.
• Weak policy enforcement in some regions hinders
effective conservation.
• lack of sufficient technical information on sustainable
soil
IMPORTANCE OF LAND CONSERVATION

Some importances of land conservation are listed below

• Preserves biodiversity.
• Reduces soil erosion.
• Prevents desertification.
• Prevents habitat loss.
• Protects biodiversity and endangered species.
• Supports ecosystem services like clean air and water.
• Ensures a balanced ecosystem for future generations.
Some ways to conserve land
• Establishing National Parks and
Protected Areas.
• Conservation Easements and
Community-Led Initiatives.
• Sustainable Land Use Practices such
as agroforestry.
• Sustainable Farming: Reducing
deforestation and harmful practices.. • •
• • Reforestation & Afforestation:
Planting trees to restore ecosystems.
• Policy & Legislation: Government
protection laws for critical areas.
COSTA RICA’S REFORESTATION
SUCCESS

Costa Rica is a global success in

protecting forests and biodiversity. 25%
of the country is protected, generating
income through eco-tourism and aiming
for carbon neutrality. Costa Rica reversed
deforestation by implementing strict land
conservation laws and payment for
ecosystem services. Forest cover
increased from 26% in 1983 to over 50%
by 2020. The country also aims to be
carbon neutral by 2050.
