Super Smash Bros. instruction booklet description

A Barrel (タル, Barrel) is a container item that has appeared in all five games of the Super Smash Bros. series. Due to their generic nature, they are considered to be part of the Super Smash Bros. universe, even bearing the series symbol.

Origin[edit]

Diddy throws a Barrel in Donkey Kong Country.

The barrel is a common object in real life. Usually made of wood or metal, the crate is primarily used as a shipping container for particularly large objects that could easily be damaged outside of an enclosed space. Due to their unique oblong and bulging shape, they can be placed on their side and rolled around, making them easier to transport compared to other containers.

The barrels in the Super Smash Bros. series are most similar to those from the Donkey Kong universe, which debuted in 1981 with the release of the original arcade game Donkey Kong. In that game, barrels serve as hazards in the first stage, 25m, where Donkey Kong throws them at Mario; if Mario is hit by a barrel, he loses a life. The Donkey Kong universe has included them with various roles, such as throwable objects and enemy projectiles. There is also the DK Barrel, which is used to bring back a missing Kong partner. Barrels have been notable enough in the Donkey Kong franchise that even Mario games have referenced them, such as the Mario Party 7 minigame Jump, Man, where the player character and Donkey Kong race to the top of a linear vertical area, dodging barrels along the way.

Overview[edit]

When a character picks up a barrel, they lose the ability to jump or attack. The heaviness of a barrel significantly reduces the characters movement speed, except Donkey Kong's. Furthermore, barrels cannot be picked up while airborne. Overall, barrels function similarly to crates and even share a breaking animation; this can be seen with the Smash logo during the animation being much larger than on the barrel texture.[1]

Barrels can be thrown upward, forward, or downward. If an upright barrel is struck with a weak attack or lands on a slope, it begins rolling across the stage; if it collides with a fighter, it breaks and deals moderate knockback.

Super Smash Bros.[edit]

In the original Super Smash Bros., the player cannot move at all while holding a barrel, with the exception of Donkey Kong. Interestingly, Donkey Kong can not throw Barrels below him due to the way he carries the item. There is a 12.5% chance that barrels will explode upon being thrown, and in the case that it does, it may damage the player who threw it as well.

Super Smash Bros. Melee[edit]

In Super Smash Bros. Melee, Barrels have 12 HP and, when broken, will either drop an item or explode. The chances are: 90/100 for an item and 10/100 for an explosion. When they are thrown at opponents, they can deal 18-22% damage and have a decent amount of knockback. The explosion always deals 22%.

Barrels have a 1/128 chance of containing a Goomba (2/7), ReDead (3/7), Octorok (1/7), or Topi (1/7).

Trophy[edit]

Like Crates, Barrels are often filled with items and occasionally explosive. Thrown Barrels may break on contact or go rolling along the ground to smash into characters. Like the Crate, the Barrel is heavy, so it will restrict the speed at which the character carrying it can move. This speed differs between characters.

Super Smash Bros. Brawl[edit]

In Super Smash Bros. Brawl, barrels and crates change appearance depending on the stage being played on. On futuristic stages like Lylat Cruise, they take on a metallic look, while on more fantastical stages like Yoshi's Island, they resemble wrapped presents.[2] Barrels also fly much farther and faster when struck. Additionally, once a rolling barrel stops moving, it is no longer harmful to players and can be picked up and thrown again, or attacked to either break it or send it flying.

Donkey Kong gains knockback-based super armor while carrying a Barrel, similar to his forward throw.

Trophy[edit]

Item holders similar to crates--their appearance will also change to fit the area. When you throw a barrel, it won't shatter, but rather roll across the stage. When a rolling barrel hits a character, that character gets sent sailing. Barrels are heavy, so you'll need two hands to pick them up, and your foot speed will decrease too.

Trophy[edit]

The Barrels trophy appears in both versions. In Super Smash Bros. for Wii U it is part of the Items and Rewards Trophy Box.

NTSC These barrels are crammed full of items, but they're also incredibly tough to break. No baby hits here—attacking too lightly will just send the barrel rolling away, making it a dangerous obstacle for both you and your foes. And if others break the barrel, they'll get the items you wanted!

PAL Barrels have all sorts of items inside, but they're tough! Hitting them lightly or throwing them might not be enough to get these things open. In fact, you might just end up sending them rolling, and just so you know, rolling barrels are a force to be reckoned with! They can send you flying right off the stage!
