Leviathan (リヴァイアサン, Leviathan) is a summon from the Final Fantasy series.

Origin

A giant, draconic sea serpent, Leviathan first appears as a monster that swallowed the party in Final Fantasy II. Upon the addition of Summon magic in Final Fantasy III, Leviathan went on to become one of the series's most powerful recurring summons alongside Bahamut, and is known by titles such as "The Sea King", or "Lord of All Waters". Though appearing slightly less frequently compared to Bahamut and Odin in later games, Leviathan is nonetheless a powerful and significant presence in the titles where it does.

Leviathan's trademark attack, alternatively known as either Tsunami or Tidal Wave depending on the game, calls on a massive wave of water to damage all enemies. Leviathan is typically one of the series's strongest sources of Water-elemental damage, and often acquired in the mid-to-late game.

In Final Fantasy VII, Leviathan is worshipped as a sea god by the people of Wutai, and its Summon Materia is rightly acquired at the very end of the Wutai sidequest, as a reward once Yuffie defeats her father Godo.

As a stage element

Leviathan appears as one of the summons on Midgar. When he appears, he floods the stage with its Tidal Wave attack, causing it to surf across a body of water.
