What is true redaction?

PDFs contain more than what you see. Metadata, fonts, tags, and revision history all live beneath the visible content, but most tools don’t touch them. True redaction also removes sensitive data you can’t see.

Masking doesn’t get rid of hidden data

PDFs contain hidden data: metadata, fonts, digital signatures, tags that structure content, and more. Even a document’s history could be saved in a layer, potentially revealing previously deleted content.

Many PDF redaction software just masks the visible information in the top-level content stream. Any sensitive information underneath it can still be accessed with a bit of skill, undoing redaction.

Properly redacted data can’t be restored

Rather than overlaying or deleting content, the Pdftools redaction method completely rebuilds the PDF, copying over only what is visible after marking for redaction. Unnecessary data is discarded.
