"Whirlygig 2" the second quilt I made using pattern I designed, also called Whirlygig (available exclusively through the Stitchin' Post.)
Nancy Allen made Whirligig with fun, bright fabrics on a white background to create a playful, twin-sized quilt. You can do the same or use traditional fabrics to create a completely different feel to the quilt. With one, fast and easy block, this quilt can be made in just a weekend or two.
Whirlygig is a simple but beautiful block that is perfect for baby quilts. I had several charm squares left over from previous quilts. I decided to make whirlygigs. I also decided to document each step and I took a lot of pictures, one for every step. I hope that when some newbie quilter stumbles upon my blog, they will be encouraged to try this block. You need four charm squares (two of each color and background) to make one whirligig block. Think of it as a modified four-patch. the…

The whirligig block is lots of fun a goes togeher rather quickly. You don't need a lot of fabric just enough to make 2 5 inch light colored block and 2 5 inch dark colored blocks. It's a fun way to use up scraps. Step 1: Cut a piece of template plastic or thin cardboard into a five inch square. Draw a line down the middle of the template. mark a 1/4 of an inch on opposite sides of the the line and the template (look at the photo) Draw a line from the 1/4 inch mark diagonal across the square…
Wyoming Breezes: Whirligig
Tutorial: turtlehillquilter.blogspot.com/2010/01/charmed-whirlgigs-... I added a 4" white border and I could not get it straight. I really need more practice with that because I love the look. The white strips were straight, the quilt was straight, and the seams were straight, but it was so wonky! I could not get it even so I took it off. Good enough! :)

Wonky Pinwheels or Whirligigs Want to make one? If you know me, you know I don't like to follow directions, so I don't use patterns. You will need to make yourself a template. I used a thin piece of cardboard. I cut it to a 5" square. Mark the middle on top and bottom. I then measured a 1/4" away on…
