The big brown bat, Eptesicus fuscus, is considered large for an American bat. They have brown to glossy copper-colored fur on their back and a light-colored belly. They have small black ears that are rounded, their lips are fleshy, and they have a broad nose. These tough creatures can withstand conditions that other bat species cannot. They are found in the northern parts of Canada, the United States, Mexico, Central America, northern South America, and the Caribbean Islands.

Bats are mammals, and certainly not an arthropod, but I figured since they feed on numerous insects it would be okay to feature a couple of bats that came into my possession this past week. There are six species of Bats known to be in the Great Swamp NWR (New Jersey, USA). They include Big Brown, Little Brown, Red, Eastern Pipistrel and Hoary. There are also Indiana Bats which are an endangered species, which I have been helping to monitor. This is most likely a Little Brown, but most of the Myotis family of bats are rather similar.
