Spes was the goddess of hope in ancient Roman religion. Together with Fides, Fortuna and Libertas she forms the four divine personified concepts. Hope is like a last resort. It's good to have, but we shouldn't need her so often. That's how the Greeks looked upon their counterpart Elpis. They thought quite negative of the necessity of the concept. Elpis in greek mythology is the spirit of hope. She was depicted as a young woman, usually carrying flowers or a cornucopia in her hands. Elpis is perhaps a child of Nyx and mother of Pheme, the goddess of fame, renown and rumor. According to Hesiod's Works and Days, Elpis was the last item in Pandora's box (or jar). Based on his description, the debate is still alive to determine if Elpis was only hope, or more generally expectation. Her equivalent in Roman mythology was Spes.
