December 7 1941 - At just shy of 8am the Empire of Japan began its surprise attack on the United States Naval Base in Pearl Harbor which was to last nearly seven hours. There were simultaneous attacks by Japan on the Philippines Guam Malaya Singapore and Hong Kong. The attack was intended as a preventative measure to keep the US Pacific Fleet from interfering in Japan's Southeast Asian endeavors.
