Maine Coon Cat Pictures That Perfectly Depict How Large They Really Are

by Damjan

The Maine Coon cat is one of the biggest domesticated breeds of cats. The title for the longest cat in the Guinness World Records for 2010 was held by a Maine Coon cat. The cat named Stewie measured 48.5 in (123 cm) from the end of the tail to his nose's tip.

Male Maine Coons cats can weigh up to 35 lb (15.9 kg). The origins of the cat breed, however, are enveloped in mystery. Although it is entirely genetically impossible, one legend says that the breed resulted from breeding between domesticated cats and raccoons.

Another myth says that Marie Antoinette, the Queen of France, tried to escape death by execution with her favorite Turkish Angora cats. She didn't make it to the US, but the cats allegedly landed on the shores of Wiscasset, Maine, where they started to breed. This might be the reason this cat breed is called Maine.

Although they may look scary, Maine coons are known for their good and steady temper. They are often called "gentle giants. " They are kind, patient, very social, and like human company. They are generally not known for being a "lap cat", but there are many exemptions. They are loyal and playful and independent. Their gentle nature makes them comfortable around dogs, other cats, and kids. They are intelligent and can be taught many things if you are willing to invest some time in it.
