What better way to welcome spring and summer than with a gorgeous butterfly door or wall hanger! You've seen them already made - but have you wondered how to actually make the butterfly? Well, today I'm going to show you how! Made from scratch using dollar store items, you will be surprise how easy it is to make one!

This whimsical wall hanger has a rope outline in a butterfly shape made out of poster foam board with a burlap fabric covering - all from the dollar store! And the best part, you can dress it up with pretty florals and bows, too! And then, this butterfly hanger can be placed on your door or wall as a decorative accent - making a great statement to welcome family and friends to your home!

DT Wire Tray Wall Decor

It’s time for our monthly blog hop challenge hosted by Beverly @Across the Blvd. This month’s theme is a Dollar Store Craft. The participants were challenged to create a project using mostly items from a dollar store.
Occasionally you can find some very chic and out of the ordinary looking items while shopping at the Dollar Tree!  How about a gold wire tray and basket? I had to do a double take when I saw them and actually looked around to see if anyone was watching me. Lol!

And as the description for the wire basket stated, it gives off a vintage chic vibe that will compliment any home decor! Imagine that! So I grabbed one of each, but didn't have a clue as to what I would do with them. I know they make great storage pieces - perfect for keeping things like decorative cardstock in the tray or fruit in the basket. But wait a minute! For the wire basket, DT said it was perfect to store blankets and pillows or turn it upside down to make a table. What, for dolls? I think someone got the descriptions mixed-up on this one. The round basket is only 4.75 inches high. Oh well, it's still nice! But for the Dollar Store Challenge, I'd rather focus on the gold wire tray - using it as a decorative piece instead of a storage unit.

Let's begin with gathering a few Dollar Tree supplies!
  • Gold Wire Tray
  • Paper Napkins
  • Gold Floral Wire
  • Mod Podge
Plus:  Glass bottle
         Paint brush/Scissors
         Plastic sandwich bag
         Wire cutter
DIY Crepe paper flowers or faux flowers

First,  clean the bottle with soap and water and dry. Then wipe the glass using an alcohol dampen paper towel to remove any residual dirt and grime which might be left. Next, take a colorful paper napkin and decide how you want the design on the glass and cut it out.

Separate the layers of the paper napkin - using only the printed top layer.
Again, measure the cut-out napkin by wrapping it around the bottle to see how much is needed.

Then cut it out to fit the bottle.

Next, brush a light layer of Mod Podge on the front of the bottle .  .  .
and lay the napkin (printed side up) on top of the decoupage glue. Insert your hand into plastic bag and begin smoothing out the napkin. Continue adding Mod Podge to the glass and smoothing the napkin out using the plastic bag - going around the bottle in sections until all of the bottle is covered with the napkin design.  Use the brush to apply a little extra decoupage glue along the seam and under curves along the edges.

Once the napkin has dried, apply another coat of decoupage glue over the entire napkin area to seal and let dry.

Then use the gold floral wire to attach the bottle to the wire tray by wrapping the wire around the neck of the bottle and tray several times and twisting together in place, cutting off excess wire.

Now it's time to add the flowers!

What a simple but beautiful way to add a decorative touch to your wall using a
dollar store wire tray!

Dollar Baking Tray With Handles

We all love updating dollar store items! And the cookie pan is a popular item to use in craft projects! And it's definitely fun turning plain old cheap stuff into decorative, useful household items! Just take a look and see how I updated this cookie pan! It's so easy to turn a cookie baking pan into a decorative tray with handles! Perfect for this month's Upcycled Project Blog Hop Challenge!

Materials:
Cookie Pan
White chalk paint
Paint brush
Paper Napkins (2)
Scissors
Matte Mod Podge
Ziplock Bags
18 gauge tarnish resistant wire
E6000 glue/hot glue

Instructions:
Begin by removing the label on the pan. Then wash and clean off any residual glue, dirt and grime. Let dry.
Once thoroughly dry, paint the pan using white chalk paint. You will need at least two coats.
Next, remove all of the white paper backings of the printed portion of the napkin. I always dampen my forefinger with a light dab of mod podge and tap together my thumb until sticky and then touch the corner edge to take apart the paper layers.
Next, size up napkin placement on tray and decide what you need to cover and what needs to be cut off. The design of the napkin had the same pattern on each end, but the height of the napkin was too large for the tray. And the width fitted perfectly and not adjustments were needed.

So I cut the napkin off to allow enough space to add the same border.
This is how the napkin looked after cutting.
To decoupage the napkin, I applied mod podge on the tray in sections - to keep the wrinkles at a minimum. The napkin was not of a good quality - quite thin and was wrinkled beforehand.
Once the decoupage was applied, I smoothed out the napkin using a ziplock plastic bag that I cut the top and bottom off to open full.
Once the napkin was smooth out, I let the decoupaged napkin portion dry.
Then I used the other end half of the napkin to match the plaid lines
And applied that piece the same way (in sections) and smoothing out using ziplock plastic and let dry.
Since you could see the straight lines of the added piece, I decided to cut out decorative trim pieces from another piece of napkin and decoupage them on .  .  .
for a seamless look!
To make the tray handles - for each handle, I cut three 24" lengths of 18 gauge wire and folded each piece in half, wrapping the wires with one of the wire loops.
And began braiding the wire until reaching the end. Sorry, I somehow didn't take pictures of the completed braid.

But here is the completed braided handle - hand shaped and glued on first with hot glue and then E6000 for a permanent hold.
I'm loving how this turned out!

It's the 2nd Monday of the month and time for another Monthly Challenge Blog Hop! I've joined a group of creative bloggers to bring you this monthly challenge blog hop!   The theme for March is to create an upcycled, repurpose, remake, reuse project!

MC Inspired Dollar Store Ornament

We all love dollar store creations! And here's a fun way to dazzle your family and friends with an easy to make dollar store ornament design!  So raid your dollar store holiday craft supplies for interesting embellishments to decorate plain ornaments!
They won't believe you actually transformed a plain dollar store ornament into a MacKenzie Childs inspired beauty using a steering wheel cover!
Supplies Used:
Buffalo checked steering wheel cover
Oversized Ornament
Rubber bands
Twisted twine
FabriTac glue
Mod Podge
Paper towel, pencil, scissors
Ribbon 2.5" mesh
Glitter glue
Glitter
Tube confetti
Vase filler
Craft knife, paint brush, plastic spoon

How To:
When I spotted the black & white checked steering wheel cover, I immediately thought of a McKenzie-Childs inspired project! But since there wasn't too much fabric for the cover, my options were limited. Then, I thought of decorating one of those plain jumbo ornaments the Dollar Tree sells. You can really make them into pretty ornaments! Take a look here!

For this, the seams must be open on the cover in order to use as much of the fabric as possible. I used a craft knife because I couldn't find my seam ripper. Duh! In opening seams, if you can gently pull up the threads to free one of the threads up so you can grasp it with your fingers, then pull on the freed thread so it can easily be pulled through the fabric - it really makes opening the seams go much quicker!
And then press to remove all the wrinkles!
Next, divide the ornament into eight segments using rubber bands.
And, using a paper towel, trace the outline of the rubber band to make a pattern of the segment to cut out from the checked fabric.
Then apply Fabri-Tac glue to the back of the fabric segments .  .  .
and attach to the ornament in the
four quadrants 12-3-6-9 clock position.
Next, apply strips of twisted twine with glue to define the segments and .  .  .
add strips of ribbon mesh (use segment pattern) to the exposed areas of the segments.

Next, paint Mod Podge over the ribbon mesh .  .  .
and sprinkle on a mixture of glitter, tube confetti and vase filler on the Mod Podge. Use the back of the plastic spoon to press the mixture down into the Mod Podge. Let dry completely.
Once dry, apply a layer of Mod Podge to seal.

Once the Mod Podge is dry, add glitter glue for additional sparkle and let dry.
And finally, add handmade bows to the top of the ornament to complete the look!
What's more charming than a handmade ornament - especially one using items from the dollar store!
