Florian Künstler

Florian Künstler emulates a generation or two of sensitive American popsmiths like Ed Sheeran, Shawn Mendes, or John Legend, adapting their catchy melodicism and relatable, heart-on-sleeve lyrics for listeners in his native Germany. His hard work has paid off thanks to 2023’s viral hit “Kleiner Finger Schwur” and other favorites like “Magnet” (a collaboration with dance duo Gestört aber GeiL) and “Weiße Haare.”Born in 1985 in Berlin, Künstler was taken from his drug-addicted mother at a young age and raised instead by a foster family in the village of Ratekau. His foster father gave him his first guitar when he turned 12, and he found that he had a knack for writing songs. He struck out on his own at the age of 20 after conflicts with his foster family, moving to the nearby city of Lübeck.He first started recording and performing as half of a duo with Immo “Charly” Bahns, a childhood friend he reconnected with later in life. The pair self-released several albums as Charly und Herr Künstler and performed nationally until Bahns decided to move on. Künstler temporarily walked away from music, too, working in healthcare in Berlin for several years. A series of personal hardships, from a breakup to the exhausting work commute, led to a moment of clarity in 2018, when he decided to invest his energy into music again.Künstler's work paid off when he signed a deal with Columbia Records' German division. Despite the challenges of marketing himself at a time when the COVID-19 pandemic was grinding much of the industry to a halt, his early EPs, including Umwege (2020) and Gute Nachrichten (2022) were well-received by fans. (Both were combined into an album, also named Umwege, in 2022.) Moving to the Universal-distributed label Electrola in 2023, and following years of cultivating a following on social media apps, his single “Kleiner Finger Schwur” (literally, “One Finger Promise,” with cover art showcasing hands locked at the little finger) just missed the German Top 40 but racked up streams in the tens of millions. It was featured on his next album, Gegengewicht, which he quickly followed with another, 2025’s Du bist nicht allein, featuring standout cuts including “Weiße Haare” and the title track (translated to “You Are Not Alone,” an original of Künstler's).
