Alex Winston

A cherubically soulful, opera-trained singer and songwriter, Alex Winston makes intelligent, technicolored pop that weaves together psychedelic indie rock, folk, and dance traditions. She first garnered buzz with her 2011 Sister Wife EP, drawing well-earned comparisons to artists like Kate Bush, PJ Harvey, and Joanna Newsom. In 2012, she delivered her full-length debut, King Con. Following her 2021 electro-pop side project Post Precious with MS MR's Max Hershenow, she returned with her sophomore album, Bingo!, in 2024.Born in 1987 in the nearby Detroit suburb of Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, Winston became interested in music at a young age and was encouraged by her parents. At age seven, she began playing guitar with her father in the basement of their home and had soon discovered artists like Carole King and Laura Nyro. She also took classical and opera vocal lessons and taught herself piano. By her teens, she was writing and performing her own songs and in 2007, released her debut EP, By the Roots.Around 2010, Winston moved to New York, where she began performing at various clubs. She also began collaborating with production duo the Knocks, releasing 2010's Basement Covers EP, a collection of interpretations of tracks by Mumford & Sons, the Rolling Stones, and Jack Peñate. A year later, she released a second EP, Sister Wife, which showcased her original songs including the title track, "Locomotive," and "Choice Notes." The album drew buzz and led to a deal with Island Records, which-released Sister Wife, along with a remix version.In 2012, she delivered her full-length debut, King Con, which again featured production by the Knocks, along with Charlie Hugall and Bjorn Yttling. It featured several of her previously released singles and found her expanding the instrumentation and sonic arrangements of her sound. Along with opening spots for Gotye, Grouplove, and Neon Trees, she released the 2013 standalone single "101 Vultures" and the 2015 EP The Day I Died. By 2015, Winston had signed with 300 Records and already started work on a sophomore full-length album with producer Catherine Marks. However, diagnosed with Lyme Disease, she ultimately shelved the project. Though her health difficulties would last two years, she stayed busy, relocating to Los Angeles and joining forces with MS MR's Max Hershenow in the electro-pop duo Post Precious. In 2021, they released the Crown EP, which found them collaborating on songs with Charli xcx and Ryn Weaver. Winston eventually returned to her solo career, marking the tenth anniversary of King Con with a 2022 vinyl re-release that included an EP of reworked versions of her songs. A year later, she delivered a covers EP, Other People's Love Songs, taking on songs by Daniel Johnston, Magnetic Fields, and Charli xcx. In 2024, she released her long-awaited sophomore full-length, Bingo!, which found her embracing the soulful psych-pop and anthemic balladry of her debut with added emotional depth and maturity. Included on the album were the singles "Stassia," "Hot One," and "Where My Cowboy's At?"
