Joviale

Joviale is a poetic singer/songwriter, guitarist, and producer melding left-field forms of pop and R&B with touches of dream pop and funk. The North Londoner emerged with Crisis (2019) and Hurricane Belle (2019), a pair of EPs made in collaboration with Bullion. The artist has since become part of the Ghostly International roster, teaming with John Carroll Kirby, Jkarri, and Kwaku Konadu, among others, for Mount Crystal (2025), a loosely conceptual debut album -- originally conceived as a fictitious murder mystery -- rooted in real-life romantic pitfalls. Born and raised in North London, Joviale Tshabola developed an early interest in a wide variety of music, absorbing the traditional music of their parents' native Congo, classic vocal jazz and soul, modern pop-R&B, and more. Joviale wrote poetry and sang, and eventually taught themself how to play guitar and record. It wasn't until attending a university music festival in Amsterdam, where they filled in for a last-second cancellation, that they first played in public, and in the process discovered that performing with a guitar helped alleviate their stage fright. Local gigs and demos posted online led to Joviale teaming with producer/artist Bullion and Blue Flowers Music. Joviale made their commercial debut in May 2019 with "Dreamboat," which was soon followed by "Ride Away," "Taste of the Heavens," and a creative update of Rare Silk's "Storm." The latter led off Bullion's 4 Down compilation, and the first three songs subsequently formed the basis of Joviale's Crisis EP, issued that September. Hurricane Belle, an independent second EP made with Bullion, arrived in May 2021. At some point after the release of a stray 2022 single, Joviale signed with Ghostly International, and in 2025 returned with "Moonshine," a comparatively funky single they produced with John Carroll Kirby (Blood Orange, Solange, Frank Ocean), Jkarri (PinkPantheress), and Kwaku Konadu. Additional preview tracks over the next few months built more anticipation for the full-length Mount Crystal, which saw release in September. Along with the aforementioned co-producers, the album featured contributions from the likes of Carter Lang, Sam Wilkes, and Will Miller, as well as familiar associates Laura Groves and Fabiana Palladino.
