Troy Cartwright
Born and bred in Texas, Troy Cartwright is a singer and songwriter whose songs mix the sincere and relatable lyrics of country music, the catchy melodies and hooks of pop, and the passion and fist-pumping anthems of rock & roll. A graduate of one of America's most prestigious music schools, Cartwright has the smarts and sophistication to craft hit songs, but he does so while sharing stories of love and small-town life, while the mild twang of his vocals brings out the honest humanity of the material. Cartwright's debut EP, 2013's Bull Run, helped him win a songwriting award, and 2016's Don't Fade gave him his first commercial breakthrough, while EPs like 2021's Halfway to Houston and 2022's Just Kids, and singles like "Unlove You," "Wild One," and "Deathbed," have proved his most confident work to date.Born on April 3, 1990, Troy Cartwright was raised in Dallas, Texas and was given his first guitar when he was 12 years old. Not long after he had learned to play, he began writing songs and was fascinated with how to put melodies and lyrics together. While he was in high school, Cartwright started playing in public, performing at local bars and clubs with a roots rock band. After graduating, Cartwright took summer courses at New York University, and his time in the city convinced him he wanted to make music his career. He relocated to Boston and attended the Berklee College of Music, where he focused on his songwriting and made money singing at weddings in his spare time. In 2012, Cartwright graduated from Berklee and returned to Texas; a year later, he released a four-song independent EP, Bull Run. That year, Cartwright won the annual B.W. Stevenson Memorial Songwriting Competition, and he was soon opening for noted artists such as Hayes Carll, William Clark Green, and John Fullbright; the latter referred Cartwright to producer Wes Sharon, who was at the controls for his debut album, Troy Cartwright, in 2015. One of the tracks on the album, "Next Flight Home," picked up airplay in Texas, and his audience grew. Another Texas singer and songwriter, Rob Baird, stepped in to produce Cartwright's 2016 five-song EP, Don't Fade, which gave him his first placement on the nationwide country charts, peaking on the album listings at number 60. In 2017, Cartwright moved to Nashville to be closer to the heart of the music business. The same year, Rolling Stone profiled him in a piece titled "10 New Country Artists You Need to Know." In 2018, Cartwright signed a recording contract with Warner Music Nashville, having already become part of their songwriting roster. In the middle of 2019, Warner released the singles "Love Like We Used To" and "Hung Up on You." The former became a minor hit, while the latter was a major success on radio and streaming services. "My First Beer" and "Cake for Breakfast" followed, and Cartwright was attracting larger audiences than ever before on the road. May 2021 saw the release of a six-song live EP, Memory Machine Sessions, and the following October saw the release of a studio effort, Halfway to Houston, which included the singles "Hammer" and "Shine on Me." Another EP arrived in 2022, Just Kids, a seven-song effort that combined several country hits, including "That's Why," "Boys Like Trucks," and "Prettiest Girl I Don't Know." Cartwright also co-wrote "Horizon," a track that appeared on Nickelback's 2022 album Get Rollin'. He was prolific in 2023, releasing a steady stream of singles, with an emphasis on moody numbers like "Unlove You," "Wild One," and "Deathbed." He hit the road, playing for fans on the first leg of his "Unlove You Tour," which extended into 2024.
