Freezing Cold

New York indie punk trio Freezing Cold make driving, emotionally resonant songs Inspired by '90s alternative and indie sounds along with their own curiosities. The band explored the effects of time through a powerful, musically curious rock sound on their second album, 2025's Treasure Pool.Freezing Cold formed in 2017, co-founded by drummer/vocalist Angie Boylan and singer/guitarist Jeff Cunningham, both of whom had previously played in various bands in Long Island’s DIY scene in the early 2000s. They were joined by ex-Weed Hounds bassist Nick Rice and quickly recorded a three-song demo with Swearin's Kyle Gilbride. In 2019 the band finished work on their first full-length, Glimmer. Shortly before the late September release of the album, Boylan was recruited by Sleater-Kinney as a touring drummer, following the resignation of their longtime drummer Janet Weiss. Also not long after the release of Glimmer, Freezing Cold welcomed new bassist Leanne Butkovic, who brought a fresh energy to the band’s sound not just with their bass playing, but also with ideas for vocal harmonies and the use of effects. The band worked for many years on the recording of their second LP, Treasure Pool, a set of songs that reflected the enhanced chemistry of their new line up as well as an expanded instrumentation that included synth parts, complex vocal harmonies, and woodwinds.
