Tamar-Kali

Tamar-Kali (born Tamara Colletta Brown) is a Brooklyn-based singer/songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and film composer. Her innovative and soulful fusion of classical, alternative rock, and post-punk, deeply influenced by her Gullah heritage from the Sea Islands of South Carolina, has earned her critical acclaim and mainstream success. She released her debut album, the rock-, funk-, and soul-leaning Black Bottom, in 2010 and gained significant recognition in 2017 with her award-winning film score for Dee Rees' Oscar-nominated Mudbound (2017). Tamar-Kali continued to earn accolades for her soundtrack work, contributing scores for 2020's biopic of author Shirley Jackson and 2024's boxing drama The Fire Inside -- that same year saw her compose the score for another film about a famous Shirly, the first Black woman to be elected to the United States Congress, Shirley Chisolm. In addition to her solo and soundtrack work, Tamar-Kali bridges the gap between classical and post-punk with her string sextet and voice project, Psychochamber Ensemble.
