Wucan
A proudly retro rock band from Germany, Wucan wave their freak flag high with a high-energy fusion of metal, prog, and psychedelic elements. Playing what they describe as "Magic Flutey Hard Rock," the centerpiece of the band is Francis Tobolsky, who trades off between impassioned vocals, adventurous flute soloing, and added textures on guitar and theremin, while the rest of the band lays down heavy but limber jams behind her. Wucan established the framework of their sound on early releases like 2014's Vikarma and 2015's Sow the Wind, and broke through with 2017's Reap the Storm and the single "The Rat Catcher." The group embraced a leaner and more modern sound on 2025's Axioms without losing touch with their trademark approach. The Wucan story begins in late 2011, when Francis Tobolsky was eager to form a band and placed an ad in a student periodical, declaring "Blues Brothers Wanted." While she didn't attract many men in black suits and fedoras, she did recruit a guitarist, Tim George, and a drummer, Axel Pätzold, and the three began practicing regularly. In November 2012, bassist Patrik Dröge signed on, and the first lineup of Wucan was complete. After playing live gigs and posting performances on social media, this edition of the group released their first EP, Vikarma, in 2014. By the time Sow the Wind was issued in 2015, Pätzold had left Wucan and Leo Vaessen had taken over as the group's drummer, and when recording began on 2017's Reap the Storm, the band had once again replaced their drummer, with Philip Knöfel as their new timekeeper. The LP was their most accomplished to date, and included "The Rat Catcher," which became a minor hit, as well as "Aging Ten Years in Two Seconds" and "Cosmic Guilt," where they experimented with long-form compositions (the songs ran 21 and 18 minutes, respectively). After extensive European touring, Wucan were planning their next recording project when the COVID-19 pandemic of 2020 locked them out of the studio for a while. In 2021, the group played a special concert for German radio; restrictions for live shows were still in place, and the group played for a selected audience of just 40 people. In 2023, the show was issued on the album Live at Deutschlandfunk, which documented another lineup change, as Alexander Karlisch took over from Patrik Dröge on bass; between the recording and release of the live album, the group issued their third full-length studio effort, 2022's Heretic Tongues. For 2025's Axioms, the band added a more significant Krautrock influence to their music, giving the performances a leaner and more dynamic attack while preserving their established approach.
