ARI HICKS

Active since the 2020s, Ari Hicks has been marching to her own programmed beats since she started: woozy, infectious electronics underscoring catchy melodies and introspective lyrics delivered in a low, welcoming voice. She proclaimed It’s Not That Deep on two EPs with that title, but her songs speak to the shared experiences of young women, from finding your identity to expressing it to the right partner.Arianna Singh-Hicks was born and raised in Toronto, later speaking in interviews of the difficulties of growing up in predominantly white neighborhoods and striving to excel in school and extracurricular activities. She was barely out of school and in her twenties when, using the mononym ARI, she released her debut single “Nothin But a Monster” in 2020, a collaboration with Doja Cat producer Cambo. The EP IDIOT GRL followed, running the gamut from R&B to synth pop with an occasional, unexpected guitar edge in places. Months later, she was up and running with a Halloween-themed EP that featured a cover of Screamin’ Jay Hawkins' “I Put a Spell on You” and the original song “Kiss Me, Kill Me.”After a relatively quiet 2021 marked by only one single, “Everyone Is Disappointing,” Hicks rebounded into 2022 with the EP It’s Not That Deep: Chapter 1, her first release under her full name. It featured popular tracks “Romeo Dies,” “Shut Up and Look Pretty,” and “Sucker.” A sequel, It’s Not That Deep: Chapter 2, closed out the year, featuring her signature flourishes (stormy synth beats, pitch-shifted vocal doubling) on favorites “Midas” and “Criminal.”As is so often the case in the streaming world, Hicks’ 2023 -- during which she released no new music -- shifted significantly when “Kiss Me, Kill Me” became an out-of-nowhere viral hit on social media, raising her profile significantly. In 2024, she joined the line-up of the inaugural Lavender Wild Festival, an LGBTQ+ centered music program in Toronto, and released “Good Boy” and “Innocent,” her first two singles distributed by Warner's Canadian division.
