Divine

Harris Glenn Milstead, born on October 19, 1945 in Baltimore, became known as Divine thanks to filmmaker John Waters, who gave him his stage name along with the tagline “the most beautiful woman in the world... almost.” He began his drag career in short films like Roman Candles and Eat Your Makeup, gaining notoriety with Mondo Trasho and Multiple Maniacs. Divine reached cult status with Pink Flamingos (1972), followed by Female Trouble (1974), Desperate Living (1977), and Polyester (1981).

In 1981, Divine launched a successful music career in the disco and Hi-NRG scenes. He recorded club hits produced by Bobby Orlando such as Native Love (Step By Step) and Shoot Your Shot. Later collaborations with Stock Aitken Waterman led to further hits like You Think You're a Man, I'm So Beautiful, and Walk Like a Man. His discography includes the albums My First Album (1982), The Story So Far (1984), and Maid in England (1988). After starring in the mainstream hit Hairspray as Edna Turnblad, Divine died unexpectedly on March 7, 1988, at the age of 42. He remains a trailblazing queer icon and a drag legend whose influence continues to inspire.
