Brothers Keepers

Brothers Keepers, a German-based transnational anti-racism project, was formed in response to the murder of Alberto Adriano by neo-Nazis in Dessau in 2000. The group, primarily composed of Afro-German musicians, aimed to fight back against racism through hip hop, reggae, and soul music. Their debut single "Adriano (Letzte Warnung)" was released in response to Adriano's murder and remains their most popular release, with over 6 million views on streaming video sites. The project gained prominence through the collaborative album Lightkultur, released on December 3, 2001. The title is a pun on conservative politician Günther Beckstein’s term "deutsche Leitkultur" ("German leading culture"). The album featured notable German musicians such as Torch, Samy Deluxe, Afrob, Denyo from the Beginner, and D-Flame, with proceeds going to charity. Brothers Keepers released their next album Am I My Brother's Keeper? later in the year, led by the singles "Bereit!" and "Will We Ever Know?". Throughout their career, Brothers Keepers faced criticism for both being "too German" and "too Black," as well as for perpetuating male dominance and masculinity. Despite these controversies, they made significant contributions to the protest against racial divides and essentialization for the Afro-German community.
