Dan Sultan
Dan Sultan is an Australian singer/songwriter and actor based in Melbourne whose passionate roots-inflected sound has won him acclaim and a widespread national fanbase. After winning a pair of ARIA Awards for his 2009 album Get Out While You Can, he broke through to mainstream success with his gold-certified third album, 2014's Blackbird. A shift toward a more hard-driving soul sound on 2017's Killer kept him in the Top Five, after which he experimented with a stripped-down acoustic set and a children's album. Sultan returned in 2023 with a deeply personal and self-produced album simply titled Dan Sultan.Sultan began playing music at a young age, influenced by Jimi Hendrix and classic guitar rock, though tribal culture was also a mainstay of his youth and would later find a place in his musical life. Working with guitarist and collaborator Scott Wilson, Sultan released his debut album, Homemade Biscuits, in 2006 aided by a grant from musician John Butler's Seed Fund. His soulful, country-influenced rock was well-received and his second album, 2009's Get Out While You Can, made it to number one on Australia's independent album chart. He and his band went on to play most of the country's prominent musical festivals. That same year, he made his acting debut in the film adaptation of the musical Bran Nue Dae. Continuing to honor his tribal roots, Sultan was pegged to join the aboriginal music collective the Black Arm Band. In 2010, he was the recipient of two ARIA (Australian Recording Industry Awards) awards for Best Blues and Roots Album and Best Male Artist. For his third long-player, he and his band traveled to the U.S. to record with producer Jacquire King (Kings of Leon, Tom Waits, Modest Mouse) in Nashville. The album Blackbird was released in the summer of 2014, reaching number four on the Australian charts and eventually going gold. For his fourth LP, 2017's Killer, Sultan moved in more of a hard-hitting pop and neo-soul direction with production from Jan Skubiszewski. Another Top Five ARIA success, he followed it a year later with a companion EP, Killer Under a Blood Moon, which saw him rerecording some of Killer's tracks with guest artists like Meg Mac and Camp Cope. Sultan's next full-length release, 2019's Aviary Takes, also focused on earlier material. Along with stripped-down acoustic renditions of songs from his first four albums, it included a handful of covers including a version of Florence + the Machine's "Dog Days Are Over." That same year, he offered up the playful Nali & Friends, which won him an ARIA Award for Best Children's Album. A period of soul-searching and personal growth followed over the next few years as Sultan shifted toward a more personal songwriting style. This was reflected in his 2023 full-length, a self-titled set that he co-produced alongside Joel Quartermain. The album, Dan Sultan, reached number 15 on the Australian charts and was nominated for three ARIA Awards.
